College to Host Ella Baker Day Symposium

The College of Charleston African American Studies Program with co-sponsorship from the Department of Sociology & Anthropology will present the 2013 Ella Baker Day Symposium on Thursday, April 11, 2013. The symposium honoring the civil rights activist will be held in the Alumni Center of the School of Education, Health, and Human Performance (86 Wentworth St.) starting at 6:30 p.m. The event celebrates the legacy of Ella Baker and aims to foster greater discussion regarding participatory democracy, social justice, and contemporary actions to create a more just and ethical society.? This event is free, and all are welcome.

Gregory Fairchild, associate professor at the University of Virginia?s Darden School of Business will be the featured speaker at the event.? Dr. Fairchild?s research and teaching focus on strategic management, entrepreneurship, and ethics as well as community development finance.? He has recently received research grants and recognition for his Prisoner Reentry Training Program, which teaches inmates how to be successful entrepreneurs.

In 2012, he was named one of the ?50 Best Business School Professors? by Poets & Quants and one of the ?Top Ten Business School Professors in the World? by CNN Money/Fortune.

Ella Josephine Baker was born December 13, 1903, in Norfolk, Virginia.? Both sets of her grandparents grew up under slavery. One of this nation?s greatest activists, Ella Baker worked with notable organizations such as Dr. King?s Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC), the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), and the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC).? She has been recognized as the mother of the Civil Rights Movement and was known for her belief in the potential and dignity of every individual.? Ms. Baker passed away on December 13, 1986, in New York.
