First Data names JPMorgan executive Bisignano as CEO

MADRID, April 28 (Reuters) - Malaga kept up their push for a possible return to the Champions League next season with a 2-1 win at home Getafe that lifted them to fifth in La Liga on Sunday. Striker Roque Santa Cruz headed them in front just before halftime and defender Weligton doubled the lead with another header, this time from a corner, two minutes after the re-start. Getafe pulled one back with a close-range volley from Juan Valera in the 70th minute and Manuel Pellegrini's side endured some nervy moments near the end as they missed a number of chances to settle the game. ...

Iceland returns center-right parties to power

REYKJAVIK, Iceland (AP) ? In a dramatic about-face, Icelandic voters have returned to power the center-right parties that led the national economy to collapse five years ago.

With all votes counted Sunday, the conservative Independence Party and rural-based Progressive Party ? who governed Iceland for decades before the 2008 crash ? each had 19 seats in Iceland's 63-seat parliament, the Althingi.

The parties, who are promising to ease Icelanders' economic pain with tax cuts and debt relief, took 51 percent of the vote between them, and are likely to form a coalition government.

Voters shunned the Social Democrat-led coalition that has spent four years trying to turn the country around with painful austerity measures. The Social Democrats took nine seats and their former coalition partners the Left-Greens seven.

The pro-Europe Bright Future party took six seats and online freedom advocates the Pirate Party three.

"We are very happy, we are very grateful for the support that we see in the numbers," said Independence Party leader Bjarni Benediktsson.

Either 43-year-old Beneditksson or Progressive Party chief Sigmundur David Gunnlaugsson, 38, is likely to be Iceland's next prime minister.

The shift to the right following Saturday's parliamentary election will almost certainly shelve Iceland's plans to join the European Union, with which it has begun accession talks. Both the Progressives and Independents oppose joining the 27-nation bloc.

The two parties governed Iceland for several decades, often in coalition, overseeing economic liberalization that spurred a banking and business boom ? until Iceland's economy crashed spectacularly during the 2008 credit crisis.

A volcano-dotted North Atlantic nation with a population of just 320,000, Iceland went from economic wunderkind to financial basket case almost overnight when its main commercial banks collapsed within a week of one another.

The value of the country's currency plummeted, while inflation and unemployment soared. Iceland was forced to seek bailouts from Europe and the International Monetary Fund.

Since then, Iceland has in many ways made a strong recovery. Unemployment has fallen and the economy is growing.

But inflation remains naggingly high, and many Icelanders still struggle to repay home and car loans they took out ? often in foreign currencies whose value soared after the crash ? in the years of easy credit.

Some blamed the outgoing government of Prime Minister Johanna Sigurdardottir for agreeing to internationally approved austerity measures and accused it of caving in to pressure to compensate Britain and the Netherlands for their citizens' lost deposits in the failed online bank Icesave. Icelanders have twice rejected Icesave repayment deals agreed to by Sigurdardottir's government.

Despite being widely blamed for the financial meltdown, the Independents and Progressives say they are now best placed to lead the economic recovery.

The Progressives have promised to write off some mortgage debt, taking money from foreign creditors. Benediktsson's Independence Party is offering lower taxes and the lifting of capital controls that he says are hindering foreign investment.

"I think people knew that hard times were ahead in 2009," Benediktsson said. "But they were hopeful, and they were introduced to a plan that would bring us quicker out of the crisis than has been the reality.

"So people are now looking forward and asking themselves ... what kind of a plan is the most likely one to bring more growth, more job creation, to close the budget deficit, and have Iceland grow into the future? These are the issues that I think these elections are all about."

Jerry Lewis makes appearance at 'King of Comedy'

NEW YORK (AP) ? The Tribeca Film Festival has ended on a royal note with Jerry Lewis showing up at the 30th anniversary screening of "The King of Comedy."

The 87-year-old comedian-actor walked out to thunderous applause after the screening Saturday, joining co-star Robert De Niro and director Martin Scorsese.

Lewis answered questions about the making of the film and brought the audience to laughter with a tale about a guy he met on a subway train.

In the movie, Lewis plays a talk-show host kidnapped by a deranged comedian played by De Niro.

De Niro founded the festival with producers Jane Rosenthal and Craig Hatkoff as a way to rebuild the neighborhood where the World Trade Center fell in the 9/11 attacks.

Just a few weeks ago, if taxi driver Guo Lixin is to be believed. Mr. Guo told a Hong Kong newspaper on Thursday that President Xi Jinping took an incognito ride in his cab last month, and chatted about ? what else? ? air pollution.

The news sparked enormous interest on the Chinese Internet, with most of those posting comments on Twitter-like social media platforms apparently believing the tale, but many skeptical about the value of the president?s alleged outing.

Stories about Chinese emperors passing disguised amongst their subjects, so as to learn first hand about their lives, are a staple of Chinese TV soap operas. The official media have recently made a point of presenting Mr. Xi as a ?man of the people.?

According to Ta Kung Pao, the Hong Kong daily to whom Mr. Guo gave his account, two men got into his taxi on the evening of March 1. One of them, he said, looked uncommonly like Xi, head of China?s ruling Communist Party and on the verge of being elected the country?s president.

When he commented on the fact, his mystery passenger replied ?you are the first taxi driver to recognize me,? Guo said, before writing a note wishing the driver ?safe and smooth journeys.?

There are those who saw the story as a PR exercise, pointing out that Ta Kung Pao is a strongly pro-Beijing paper. Official Chinese websites ran the story, too, giving it a degree of credibility, or at least of government approval.

Other observers were dubious about the real identity of Guo?s passenger because the handwriting of his note had nothing in common with handwriting that the verified President Xi has left in visitors? books around the country.

The story sat well, however, with the Communist Party?s propaganda efforts to build the president?s image as a forthright, honest fellow with the common touch. Xi has attracted attention by ordering the police not to block the traffic near places he is visiting just to let his motorcade past. Last week he mingled with fisherfolk on the southern island of Hainan, discussing their catch in the same way that a Western politician might on a flesh-pressing jaunt.

Not everyone is impressed, however. ?The most effective plainclothes visit is to look at Weibo every day,? commented Feng Xincheng, a well known newspaper editor, referring to Sina Weibo, a censored but nonetheless lively Twitter-like service where public criticism of the authorities is common.

It did not seem from taxi driver Guo?s account that Xi (if it was indeed he) learned much that he did not already know. As soon as he recognized his passenger Guo broke out in a cold sweat, he said, and told the distinguished man in the front passenger seat that he thought the Communist Party and government policies were correct, if not always well implemented.

?Xi,? meanwhile, fed his ordinary citizen interlocutor the same pap as government officials feed the public about how long it will take and how hard it will be to clean up Beijing?s pollution.

Neither the alleged president nor his driver ended up much the wiser, it seems. And then on Thursday evening, the official Xinhua news agency stamped on all the speculation with a terse one line announcement.

Ta Kung Pao?s report, said Xinhua, ?has proven to be a fake story.??

Threat of diabetes soars by 22 per cent with EACH fizzy drink ...

Regularly drinking just one sugar-packed soft drink raises the danger of suffering from the condition by 22 per cent.

And the risk rises with each drink ? every extra can increases the danger by more than a fifth.

Experts last night called for greater warnings of the ?unhealthy effects? of soft drinks enjoyed by millions of Britons every day.

Yesterday lead researcher Dr Dora Romaguera, from Imperial College London, warned that one problem with fizzy drinks was that they did not fill you up, so people were tempted to consume more of them.

?They should be seen as a treat you have once every couple of weeks, not as a substitute for water every time you feel thirsty,? she said.

Previous research has shown how sugary drinks can dramatically increase the risk of stroke, heart attacks and long-term liver damage similar to chronic alcohol abuse.

A typical can of fizzy drink has 150 sugar-based calories which are far more dangerous to the body than those from other sources, it was discovered.

A team from Imperial College looked at the link between sweet beverages and Type 2 diabetes in Europe, as much previous research had been carried out in North America.

They tracked their consumption by 350,000 people across eight European countries, including Britain.

The researchers found that one 12oz (336ml) serving increased the risk of Type 2 diabetes, with every additional drink raising it by 22 per cent compared with having one can a month or less.

This risk fell to 18 per cent when body-mass index was accounted for, suggesting that those who were heavier tended to drink more soft drinks and were more at risk of developing diabetes anyway.

The team also found a significant increase related to drinking artificially sweetened soft drinks.

Dr Romaguera added: ?Given the increase in sweet beverage consumption in Europe, clear messages on the unhealthy effect of these drinks should be given to the population.?

Dr Matthew Hobbs, head of research at Diabetes UK, said: ?The finding that people who drank more sugar-sweetened soft drinks were at higher risk of developing Type 2 diabetes, even when body mass index was taken into account, suggests the increased risk was not solely due to the extra calories in those drinks. The large number of people involved in this study means this finding is extremely unlikely to have happened by chance.

?It is not definitive evidence that sugar-sweetened soft drinks increase the risk of Type 2 diabetes, other than through their effect on body weight.

?We do though already recommend limiting consumption of sugary foods and drinks as these are usually high in calories and so can lead to weight gain if you have too many of them.

?This is important for Type 2 diabetes because we know that maintaining a healthy weight is the single most important thing you can do to prevent it.?

Gavin Partington, of the British Soft Drinks Association, said: ?It is well-known that diabetes is the result of many different factors, including obesity and family history.

?This study does not look at causation and cannot tell us if consuming soft drinks, or any other food or drink, is a further cause of diabetes.

?The survey is based on information about people?s food choices up to 16 years old, which is not a very good guide to what people are eating and drinking today.

?Soft drinks are safe to consume but, like all other food and drink, should be consumed in moderation as part of a balanced diet.?

GOP Lawmakers Hope to Combat Ammunition Stockpiling by Gov?t Agencies With AMMO Act

GOP Lawmakers Hope to Cut Back on Ammo Purchases by Government Agencies With AMMO ActCook County Board Proposes Tax On Guns And Ammo

Republicans in the Senate and House are expected to introduce a joint bill Friday that would limit the amount of ammunition that federal agencies are allowed to buy and stockpile over the next six months, the Washington Free Beacon reports.

The bill, titled the Ammunition Management for More Accountability or "AMMO" Act, is being proposed after several lawmakers have voiced concerns about some federal agencies, like the Department of Homeland Security, seemingly stockpiling large quantities of ammo.

"DHS, for instance, has placed two-years worth of ammunition, or nearly 247 million rounds, in its inventory," the Free Beacon notes.

In a statement provided to the Washington Free Beacon, one of the bill's co-sponsors, Sen. Jim Inhofe (R-Okla.), said federal agencies must provide more "transparency and accountability" in regards to its "stockpiles of ammunition."

"President Obama has been adamant about curbing law-abiding Americans' access and opportunities to exercise their Second Amendment rights...One way the Obama administration is able to do this is by limiting what's available in the market with federal agencies purchasing unnecessary stockpiles of ammunition," the statement adds.

More from the Free Beacon:

[T]he legislation would prevent all government agencies except for the Defense Department from purchasing and storing what lawmakers say is an excess amount of ammunition.

The bill's reach would include DHS and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), two agencies that have found themselves at the center of the ammo controversy.

"As the public learned in a House committee hearing this week, the Department of Homeland Security has two years worth of ammo on hand and allots nearly 1,000 more rounds of ammunition for DHS officers than is used on average by our Army officers," Inhofe said. "The AMMO Act of 2013 will enforce transparency and accountability of federal agencies' ammunition supply while also protecting law-abiding citizens access to these resources."

An agency covered by the legislation would not be permitted to purchase or store more ammunition than that agency retained on average between 2001 and 2009, according to an advance copy of the legislation provided to the Free Beacon.

Additionally, the AMMO Act would encourage the Government Accountability Office to audit federal agencies' ammo purchases.

"The Comptroller General of the United States shall submit to Congress a report regarding the purchasing of ammunition by agencies, which shall include an assessment of the effect of the purchasing of ammunition by agencies on the supply of ammunition available to the public," the bill reads, according to a copy reviewed by the Free Beacon.

There have been more concerns over reports of DHS's plan to purchase another 750 million rounds of ammunition over the next five years, despite having a two-year stockpile saved up. Meanwhile, gun shops across the country are reporting ammunition shortages.

4 charged after Va. freshmen swept into river

PETERSBURG, Va. (AP) ? Police arrested three men and sought a fourth Tuesday after two Virginia State University freshmen were swept away while trying to cross a swift, rain-swollen river as part of an initiation rite.

The body of one freshman, identified as Marvell Edmonson, 19, of Portsmouth, was recovered Monday. The search continued Tuesday for the second, Jauwan M. Holmes, 19, of Newport News.

The four suspects are connected to an organization known as "Men of Honor" that conducted an initiation Saturday that required seven male VSU students to walk through the rushing rapids of the Appomattox River, police said. While some were pulled to safety, two were swept away.

Chesterfield County police identified the three in custody as James A. Mackey Sr., 35, of suburban Richmond; Eriq K. Benson, 19, of Quinton; and Cory D. Baytop, 26, of Newport News. Each has been charged with five counts of hazing. Police were seeking Charles E. Zollicoffer II, 29. An address was not provided.

Benson and Baytop are VSU students. Benson's attorney did not immediately return a telephone message. It was not clear if the other suspects had attorneys.

Police Lt. Randy Horowitz described Men of Honor as a social club or "group whose mission is to build the character of young men." He said he was not familiar with the organization beyond that, and said it was not sanctioned by VSU.

University spokesman Thomas Reed said Men of Honor was not affiliated with VSU and he could provide no additional information on it. Students are provided with information about sanctioned groups on the campus, he said.

Reed declined to discuss the arrests or the two students accused, citing the investigation. He acknowledged that the school has had problems with hazing in the past and has taken steps to eliminate it.

In April, the president of the student government association was charged with hazing related to an incident off campus in neighboring Petersburg in August 2012.

In 2009, six VSU students and two nonstudents were accused of hazing after another student sought medical treatment for severe bruising. In a plea agreement, the defendants agreed to prepare and present information sessions for students at VSU in exchange for the eventual dismissal of the charges.

The historically black university has about 5,300 students in Ettrick, about 25 miles south of Richmond.

The Hen House Primitive Quilt and Craft Supplies - Peas In A Pod

It's finals week.? But it's still busy!

Yesterday, I did not get a blog post in, becasue I went to Lansing for the day and taught a workshop at our state autism conference.? I think it went okay.

On the way home, I was thirsty.? I decided to pull off the freeway at a McDonald's to get a Diet Coke.? (Don't you love McDonald's all-sizes-of-sodas-are-$1 deal?!? I do.)? As I was pulling into the town at which I exited the freeway, I saw a sign that said I was in the town of Charlotte, MI.

"Oh, my gosh!" I thought.? "I have always wanted to come to Charlotte, because there is a quilt store here all my primitive friends rave about!? I wonder if I have time to sneak in a quick trip?"? I looked at my clock.? It was only 4:15 pm.? "I can do it," I thought.? I figured I could make a stop and still be home around 6:00 or 6:15 pm.

So, I got out my smart phone, googled the address, plugged it into my GPS, and off I went, Diet Coke in hand!? I was only 5 min away!? Woo Hoo!

The shop is called The Hen House, and you may have noticed it was recently featured in the Quilt Sampler as a destination quilt shop.

IMG_1198
I drove down one if the main streets in town and was rewarded by this sight!? And tons of on-street parking available right in front of the shop.? I love that!

IMG_1205
Here is a closer look at the window display.? I was so happy.? Nothing tops off a long day of work (I was so tired from just having done a 3-hour presentation for about 160 people!) than enjoying a little fabric and quilting.

IMG_1206
The window display also promised some nice English paper piecing projects inside!? (You can see it was actually sunny here yesterday, too!? It was a beautiful day.? When I stopped in the shop, it was 64 degrees and sunny.? I really needed that.? Back to clouds and rain today, though.)

IMG_1204
When you enter the shop, you are greeted by displays of antiques and wool work projects.? There is a beautiful wool wall, with all sorts of wonderful wools.? Also, there is a nice selection of Valdani threads and other things you might need for your wool work.

IMG_1201
There is also a nice selection of civil war fabrics.? If you love Jo Morton, working small,? "dark and dirty" fabrics, and the primitive style, this shop is for you.? It is full of inspiration and fun stuff.

IMG_1202
I always joke that I'm a "bipolar quilter."? Someday I'll do a blog post on that.? I like the bright moderns, but I also love the Civil War style.? And though I haven't dared to try it yet, I really, really love the miniature quilts.? This shop is so full of eye candy and inspiration for projects.? Look at this display of miniature quilts.? I think the patterns are Jo Morton, if I'm not mistaken.? I think they are just wonderful.

IMG_1199
The owner, Nancy, was there and we struck up a conversation.? She was working on a gorgeous English paper piecing project, and I complimented her on it.? The pieces she was working with were pretty small.? She said, "If you think this is small, you should see what Elise is working on.? It's tiny."? I saw this project over on the table and asked if that was it.? Oh, my goodness!? Isn't it amazing?!? Maybe you can get a sense of the scale of this project as you see it's laying on an open magazine.

IMG_1200
Here, I pulled a penny out of my purse and laid it on the project so you caould get a better sense of scale.? This is absolutely wonderful!? How fun would this project be?!

IMG_1203
I could have stayed in this shop for hours just poking around.? There were so many neat antiques, finished quilts, and little stuff to play with.? There were English paper piecing projects, velvets, fun threads, notions, wool, fabric, punchneedle projects, wool rug projects, etc.? The store is small, but it's one of those shops that just has the most interesting stuff everywhere you turn and the nicest people working there.? I had fun talking to Nancy and Elise.? What a pleasure to just hang out with them.

IMG_1207
While I was there, I reminded Nancy that I had seen her at a trunk show in Battle Creek once.? I told her how I really wanted to learn to hook wool rugs ('cause you all know I need another hobby and more stuff to do!).? I have had a hard time being able to come to one of her classes when they are offered, due to my schedule.? Nancy said I could call her and just come up for a day, and she'd teach me.? So, I picked up this small wool rug project and am going to make an appointment with her sometime in the next few weeks (now that school is out and Sweet Pea is still in school for a while) to learn.? I am really excited.? How nice is that of her to let me come and learn from her on her time?

This is a wonderful shop.? I highly recommend it if you are in the area.? If you like brights and modern, you won't find it here.? Come here if you are looking for the primitive style, Jo Morton style, wool work, and miniature quilts.? You'll find a ton of fun stuff to capture your attention.? And you can't imagine a nicer shop owner and staff.

I felt bad after I left, because I realized I didn't even make it into the back room, which I think is the classroom.? I was on The Hen House Facebook page this morning and saw photos of the back room.? It even had basket weaving materials in it.? There were Facebook posts of the "Crankers" group--a group that does all their sewing on hand crank sewing machines.? (Wouldn't I love to have one of those machines?!)? I believe Nancy has lots of different sewing groups you can get involved in.? Check out their Facebook page for lots of fun photos.

You can shop on-line at The Hen House website.? In addition, there is also a gallery of projects, a class list, etc. on the website.

Sue, if you haven't been to this shop before, you would love it.?

Everytime I think I'm kind of "over" the primitive stuff, I realize I'm not really.? This shop could so easily suck me back in!? I'll keep you posted on my wool rug working!

Hope you enjoyed the review.? I tell you, it just made my day to add a little fabric love to it, especially because I got absolutely NO sewing done this weekend.? I spent a better part of Sunday in my office, preparing for my presentation.? So, it was nice to sneak in a little fiber and fabric inspiration.? Thank you Nancy and Elise for being the highlight of my day!

Until next time,

Finance Chair and Leading Fundraiser Max Baucus to Retire ...

With the news that Sen. Max Baucus (D-Mont.) will not run for reelection in 2014, the Senate is losing one of its most unapologetic fundraisers.

Max Baucus.JPGBaucus openly relied on lobbyists -- not viewed kindly by the public or the Obama White House -- as key sources of campaign cash. According to CRP data, Baucus took in more than $1 million in campaign contributions from lobbyists since 1990, and $565,000 from individual lobbyists in the 2012 cycle alone.

As chairman of the Senate Finance Committee, Baucus ranked as one of the most powerful Democrats in Congress and had a hand in much of the signature legislation of Obama's presidency -- most notably the health care overhaul known as the Affordable Care Act. He also teamed up with Republicans in the Bush administration to rewrite Medicare prescription drug rules -- a move that pharmaceutical companies apparently viewed happily, with that industry being his sixth largest source of cash ($950,000) since 1990.? Overall, lawyers and law firms, which give heavily to nearly all Democrats, were Baucus' biggest source of campaign funds since 1990, giving him at least $1.82 million. The securities and investment industry is close behind, having provided him $1.79 million.

Lobbyists, pharmaceutical and medical companies and the securities and investment industry were so dominant in Baucus' fundraising that 19 of the top 20 organizations that provided the most money to Baucus -- either through individuals affiliated with the groups or via PACs -- were all lobbying firms, Wall Street firms, pharmaceutical companies or medical device manufacturers.?

And Baucus had close ties to many on K Street -- dozens of his former staffers became registered lobbyists. In fact, according to CRP data, 37 former Baucus staffers became registered lobbyists, making his office the second biggest supplier of K Street revolving door lobbyists among current members of Congress (Kentucky GOP Sen. Mitch McConnell is the leader on that front). Baucus' close ties to lobbyists seem to have come into play on several occasions recently -- a slew of tax breaks worked into the "fiscal cliff" legislation passed in early January were written into the law by Baucus, and seemed directly to benefit the clients of a number of his former staffers-turned-lobbyists.

New material approach should increase solar cell efficiency

Apr. 23, 2013 ? "When designing next generation solar energy conversion systems, we must first develop ways to more efficiently utilize the solar spectrum," explained Lane Martin, whose research group has done just that.

"This is a fundamentally new way of approaching these matters," said Martin, who is an assistant professor of materials science and engineering (MatSE) at Illinois. "From these materials we can imagine carbon-neutral energy production of clean-burning fuels, waste water purification and remediation, and much more."

Martin's research group brought together aspects of condensed matter physics, semiconductor device engineering, and photochemistry to develop a new form of high-performance solar photocatalyst based on the combination of the TiO2 (titanium dioxide) and other "metallic" oxides that greatly enhance the visible light absorption and promote more efficient utilization of the solar spectrum for energy applications.

Their paper appears in the journal Advanced Energy Materials.

According to Martin, the primary feature limiting the performance of oxide-based photovoltaic and/or photocatalytic systems has traditionally been the poor absorption of visible light in these often wide band gap materials. One candidate oxide material for such applications is anatase TiO2, which is arguably the most widely-studied photocatalyst due to its chemical stability, non-toxicity, low-cost, and excellent band alignment to several oxidation-reduction reactions. As the backbone of dye-sensitized solar cells, however, the presence of a light-absorbing dye accounts for a large band gap which limits efficient usage of all but the UV portion of sunlight.

"We observed that the unusual electronic structure of SrRuO3 is also responsible for unexpected optical properties including high absorption across the visible spectrum and low reflection compared to traditional metals," stated Sungki Lee, the paper's first author. "By coupling this material to TiO2 we demonstrate enhanced visible light absorption and large photocatalytic activities."

"SrRuO3 is a correlated electron oxide which is known to possess metallic-like temperature dependence of its resistivity and itinerant ferromagnetism and for its widespread utility as a conducting electrode in oxide heterostructures," Lee added. Referring to this material as a "metal," however, is likely inappropriate as the electronic structure and properties are derived from a combination of complex electronic density of states, electron correlations, and more.

Using a process called photo-excited hot-carrier injection from the SrRuO3 to the TiO2, the researchers created new heterostructures whose novel optical properties and the resulting high photoelectrochemical performance provide an interesting new approach that could advance the field of photocatalysis and further broaden the potential applications of other metallic oxides.

This work provides an exciting new approach to the challenge of designing visible-light photosensitive materials and has resulted in a provisional patent application. The work was primarily supported by the ongoing International Institute for Carbon Neutral Energy Research (I2CNER) program, a partnership between Kyushu University in Japan and the University of Illinois.

"The I2CNER project brings together some of the leading energy researchers from around the globe," explained I2CNER Director Petros Sofronis, who is also a professor in the Department of Mechanical Science and Engineering at Illinois. "Results from Dr. Martin's research group and others demonstrate that I2CNER is not only an experiment on international collaboration. It is a concerted institutionalized effort to pursue green innovation and reduced CO2 emissions, as well as to advance fundamental science and develop science-based technological solutions for the reorganization of sustainable and environmentally friendly society."

Foxwoods Partners With GameAccount to Offer Online Gaming in US

Foxwoods

On Monday, Connecticut-based Foxwoods Resort Casino announced a partnership with GameAccount Network to deliver online gaming opportunities to the United States market.

The Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation (MPTN), which owns and operates Foxwoods, said it would initially focus on play-money games until legislation allows real-money wagering in the U.S. The agreement is subject to regulatory approval, but MPTN said it would release a play-for-fun gaming site at some point this year.

The agreement includes business-to-business (B2B) operations and will provide turnkey online gaming solutions for other Indian casinos and gaming operators.

According to the tribe, Foxwoods.com attracts one million unique monthly visitors.

As of yet, Connecticut legislation has not discussed the allowance of real-money online gaming within the state, nor has the state indicated whether the issue would be brought into discussion within the future.

New Jersey, Delaware, and Nevada are the only states that regulate online wagering in the U.S. New Jersey and Delaware offer casino games; Nevada only allows online poker.

Rodney Butler, chairman of the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation commented, ?The Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation is thrilled to announce our proposed partnership with GameAccount. The Mashantucket Pequot Tribe has long been a leader in brick-and-mortar casino operations, and with the help of GameAccount, we aim to take the same leadership position in regulated online gaming in the US. Our shared vision unites GameAccount's technical capabilities with our Foxwoods brand and our leadership in casino management.?

GameAccount is an online gaming software supplier focusing its efforts on regulated markets. The company offers a fully-integrated online gaming platform of casino and mobile skill games, as well as the ability to convert land-based slots into online games.

?As one of the first European Internet gaming system suppliers that moved into the United States in advance of intra-State regulation in 2011, we have developed the specialist experience, expertise and technical functionality required to serve Foxwoods from a hardware platform located on-property in Connecticut," said Dermot Smurfit, GameAccount's CEO. "We're delighted that this experience and our unique capabilities will support our new strategic partner Foxwoods as they build a new Internet gaming business in one of the World's most exciting emerging regulated Internet gaming markets."

Monday's agreement comes just a few months after Foxwoods? southeastern Connecticut rival, Mohegan Sun, signed a deal with Amaya Gaming (now owned by Bally Technologies) to provide free-play online poker. That deal, made in November last year, was the first agreement of its kind made by an East Coast casino bringing online gaming and poker to the U.S.

Xbox may drop to $99 by late May

A new Xbox console may be on the way, and that could mean deep discounts on the existing model next month. Could we see an Xbox under $100?

According to various tech sites, Microsoft will announce its next-gen Xbox gaming console on May 21. As with any new electronic doodad, the?Internet is all abuzz with rumors about it. Will it require an always-on Internet connection? Will it play Blu-ray? Will it cost $500? Answers: Maybe!

But since we're deal-sniffing detectives, the most interesting rumor for us is a tangential one that was first floated by Paul Thurrott of Supersite for Windows. He claims that upon the release of the next console, the?current Xbox is going to plummet in price to $99.

A $99 Xbox Would Threaten a Ton of Media Devices

Firstly, a $100 Xbox would put the present day console on par price-wise with the open-source,?Kickstarter upstart OUYA. Could the OUYA, a console based around the Android platform, compete with a console that's just as inexpensive, but already has a catalog of thousands of games? Further, there are rumors that?Valve is also going to release a cheap, set-top video game system?called Steam Box. With a $99 Xbox, their marketplace would become a whole lot more difficult to enter.

Secondly, think about what a?cheap Xbox?would do to the content streaming, set-top box market. The Xbox would be priced in-line with the Apple TV and the latest, highest-end Roku, although in order to access streaming content (like Hulu,?Netflix, Amazon Prime, and a bunch of sports channels and extras), a user would have to either purchase an Xbox LIVE subscription (priced around $40 for one year, if you get a deal) or pay a monthly fee that some have suggested will be required with the updated consoles. That said, despite that additional fee, you'd get Xbox's streaming functionality?plus?the ability to play?DVDs?and?video games.

Yes, consumers who are already invested in the Apple ecosphere will opt for?Apple TV, but for those who are new to the whole experience and looking for the best bang for their buck, a $99 Xbox looks mighty attractive. However, people who don't want or need to play video games or DVDs may turn to Roku or Apple TV as cheaper options since they don't require a LIVE-like subscription.

Regardless of speculation, our recommendation to anyone looking to buy an Xbox 360, Roku, Apple TV, or OUYA should probably wait until May 21. At that point, we should have a more clear idea of what Microsoft is planning to do. It's not that long to wait, and if you do, you might end up saving money or purchasing a better product for your cash.

Kerry pushes Turkey-Israel rapprochement

ISTANBUL (AP) ? Wrapping up a 24-hour visit to Istanbul, U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry on Sunday sought to cement and speed up an improvement in relations between Turkey and Israel as well as explore new ways to relaunch Mideast peace efforts.

President Barack Obama has made both issues foreign policy priorities for his second term and Kerry was pushing them in meetings with Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas and Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu.

On a trip to Israel last month, Obama secured a pledge from Turkish and Israeli leaders to normalize ties that broke down after a 2010 Israeli raid on a Gaza-bound aid flotilla that killed eight Turks and a Turkish-American. However, the rapprochement has been slow, sparking concerns that Turkey may be backsliding on its commitment.

U.S. officials say they are hopeful that a meeting this week of Israeli and Turkish diplomats to discuss Israeli compensation for victims of the flotilla raid will jumpstart the process of restoring full diplomatic relations and exchanging ambassadors between the two countries that Washington sees as key strategic partners in the volatile Middle East.

Turkey's Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan is due to visit Obama at the White House on May 16 and U.S. officials are keen to see substantive process by then.

However, Erdogan's plans to visit the Hamas-controlled Gaza Strip sometime in May after his trip to Washington have raised concerns. The State Department has said such a journey would be unhelpful. Both Israel and Abbas, whose Palestinian Authority is based in the West Bank, are opposed.

With Abbas, Kerry was talking about ways to improve the Palestinians' living conditions as a confidence-building measure to improve the atmosphere for a resumption in stalled peace talks with Israel.

Kerry has said he fears there is only a two- or three-year window of opportunity to reach a deal on a two-state solution that would end the decades-old Israeli-Palestinian conflict and wants to move as quickly as possible. He has met with Abbas and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu several times already to that end since becoming secretary of state.

Kerry was in Istanbul primarily to attend an international conference on Syria that began on Saturday afternoon and stretched into early Sunday morning as participants debated how best to boost aid to rebels trying to topple Syrian President Bashar Assad's regime.

At the conference, he announced that the Obama administration would double its non-lethal assistance to the Syrian opposition with an additional $123 million in supplies that could include for the first time armored vehicles, body armor, night vision goggles and other defensive military supplies.

The additional aid, which brings total non-lethal U.S. assistance to the opposition to $250 million since the fighting began more than two years ago, "underscores the United States' firm support for a political solution to the crisis in Syria and for the opposition's advancement of an inclusive, tolerant vision for a post-Assad Syria," Kerry said.

The U.S. pledge was the only tangible, public offer of new international support at the meeting of the foreign ministers of the 11 main countries supporting the opposition and fell well short of what the opposition has been appealing for: weapons and direct military intervention to stop the violence that has killed more than 70,000 people.

The Syrian National Coalition is seeking drone strikes on sites from which the regime has fired missiles, the imposition of no-fly zones and protected humanitarian corridors to ensure the safety of civilians.

While pleased with the U.S. moves, the opposition appeared deeply disappointed, especially as it lost some ground in the latest clashes with Syrian troops backed by pro-government gunmen capturing at least one village in a strategic area near the Lebanese border.

"We appreciate the limited support given by the international community, but it is not sufficient," it said in a statement released at the end of the conference. "We call on the international community to be more forthcoming and unreserved to fulfill its responsibilities in extending support that is needed by the Syrian people."

With the exception of the United States, none of the participants offered new assistance, although European nations are considering changes to an arms embargo that would allow weapons transfers to the Syrian opposition. But European Union action is unlikely before the current embargo is set to expire in late May.

Obama has said he has no plans to send weapons or give lethal aid to the rebels, despite pressure from Congress, some administration advisers and the appeals from opposition.

There are no plans to change that policy, although U.S. officials say they are not opposed to other countries sending arms, as long as the recipients have been properly vetted.

(AP) ? Eight-time defending champion Rafael Nadal recorded his 46th consecutive win at the Monte Carlo Masters by beating Frenchman Jo-Wilfried Tsonga 6-3, 7-6 (3) Saturday to set up a repeat of last year's final against top-ranked Novak Djokovic.

The Spaniard has reached five straight finals since returning from a seven-month layoff following a left knee injury. He will go for his fourth title of the season against Djokovic, who cruised past unseeded Fabio Fognini of Italy 6-2, 6-1.

The Serb showed no signs his right ankle is still bothering him, two weeks after twisting it during a Davis Cup match against the United States.

Djokovic and Nadal have not played against each other since last year's French Open final, which Nadal won. He has won their last three encounters, after Djokovic took the previous seven ? all of which were tournament finals. Nadal leads their career series 19-14.

The sixth-seeded Tsonga saved four match points, rallying from 5-1 down to force a second-set tiebreaker. He tied it 3-3 before making unforced errors by hurrying his shots.

Nadal clinched the victory with a forehand winner and took a step closer to a ninth straight Monte Carlo title and to extending his Masters titles record to 23.

Tsonga started well but missed three breakpoint chances in the fourth game ? including one which left him shaking his head in disbelief after Nadal scooped the ball off his ankles and whipped it back down the line.

"He was extremely good today, and this is also what I call the champion's luck," Tsonga said. "The top players are able to do that."

The flustered Frenchman lost his next service game and totaled 17 unforced errors in the first set compared to four for Nadal.

It looked like Nadal would wrap up the second set more quickly than the first, breaking for a 2-0 lead and holding three match points at 5-2. Tsonga saved those with some excellent shot-making, and turned the set around.

"I always try to be aggressive when I play him. It's the only way for me. If I stay back, there's no way I can win," Tsonga said. "But I can't rush to the net either because otherwise he hits a passing shot, and 90 percent of the time I lose the point.

"So I have to have the right mix between patience and aggressiveness."

With Nadal serving for the match in the ninth game, Tsonga held two breakpoints that were erased by a pair of aces. The Spaniard made two unforced errors to drop serve and the Frenchman tied it at 5-5 as chants of "Tsonga, Tsonga" rang out in the crowd.

Tsonga saved a fourth match point in the 12th game when an off-balance Nadal sent a forehand well wide.

But Tsonga ultimately made too many unforced errors ? 39 to Nadal's 12 ? costing him a chance of taking Nadal into a third set. Grigor Dimitrov won a set off Nadal before losing in Friday's quarterfinals.

Nadal has not lost at Monte Carlo since falling to former French Open champion Guillermo Coria in 2003. Nadal missed the following year because of an injury.

Fognini made 26 unforced errors and was jeered off the court at the end of his first Masters semifinal. The Italian called for a trainer at 4-1.

At the next changeover he called the trainer again, pointing to his left shin as the trainer sprayed and taped it.

The Italian lost his serve again in the next game as Djokovic wrapped up the set without facing a break point and converted two of his four chances on Fognini's serve.

Fognini quickly left the court as boos rang down from the stands.

Red Sox, Bruins postpone games during manhunt

BOSTON (AP) ? The Red Sox and Bruins postponed their games Friday as authorities searched for a suspect in the Boston Marathon bombings, virtually shutting the city down.

The teams announced about four hours before their night games were scheduled to start that they were scratched.

Police identified two suspects in Monday's explosions that killed three people and wounded more than 180. One man was killed during a shootout with police and the other was being sought in a massive police effort that dragged through the day.

Authorities in Boston suspended all mass transit, used by many fans to get to games, and told people in throughout Boston and some of its suburbs to stay inside for much of Friday as the hunt for Suspect No. 2 went on. Trains were finally allowed to run again after 6 p.m.

No makeup date was announced for the opener of the Red Sox three-game series against the Kansas City Royals scheduled at Fenway Park. Saturday's game, set to start at 1:35 p.m., was still on.

The NHL game at TD Garden between the Bruins and the Pittsburgh Penguins, two of the top four teams in the Eastern Conference, was tentatively rescheduled for Saturday at 12:30 p.m. A final decision on whether it would be played was to be made by four hours before faceoff, the Bruins said. Saturday night's originally scheduled game between the Buffalo Sabres and Penguins in Pittsburgh was rescheduled for Tuesday night.

"We totally understand the situation and (are) respectful of that," Penguins general manager Ray Shero said. "Hopefully, (we) have a chance to play tomorrow if that's the case, but, again, the safety of the people of Boston, the city of Boston is most important for everybody."

Capacity at Fenway Park, about one mile from the finish line, is 37,493 for night games. Capacity at TD Garden is 17,565. With fans advised to stay home and police devoted to the manhunt, the decision to postpone was easy.

Red Sox spokesman Kevin Gregg said the Royals have been in town since Wednesday night and spent their off day in the city on Thursday.

The Royals are staying at the Westin Copley Place hotel, about a block from the marathon finish line.

"We've been told not to go outside. We've been told the hotel has been locked down, although I've seen a handful of people moving around," Royals vice president Mike Swanson said earlier Friday. "The streets are just, wow. It's numbingly quiet for a noon hour in Boston."

The Bruins also announced that the sale of playoff tickets, scheduled to start at 11 a.m. Friday, has been put off until 11 a.m. Monday.

The New England Patriots postponed for the second time a news conference with director of player personnel Nick Caserio about next week's NFL draft. The news conference originally had been scheduled for Tuesday but was postponed after the bombings. It has been rescheduled for Monday.

The suspension of Amtrak train service forced the New England Revolution to change plans and travel by bus Friday morning to their game against the New York Red Bulls scheduled Saturday night at Red Bull Stadium in Harrison, N.J.

Boston College canceled all home athletic events for Saturday, including the annual spring football game.

Also postponed was the National Women's Soccer League game on Saturday between the Boston Breakers and FC Kansas City in Overland Park, Kan. No makeup date was announced. The decision was based on "increased security measures that have impacted travel from the area," NWSL executive director Cheryl Bailey said.

The league also said it would conduct a moment of silence before the national anthem at two games this weekend.

Even before the manhunt, the bombings resulted in two major pro sports games in Boston being scratched ? the Bruins against the Ottawa Senators last Monday night and the Indiana Pacers against the Celtics on Tuesday night. The Bruins game was rescheduled for April 28. The Celtics game was canceled outright, and the NBA's regular season ended on Wednesday.

The Celtics are scheduled to begin the first round of the playoffs Saturday in New York against the Knicks.

The Bruins resumed play on Wednesday night amid tightened security at home against the Sabres. Fans were checked with wands and cars were subject to random searches as they entered the TD Garden underground garage.

Before the game, there was a moment of silence, a slideshow of marathon scenes on the video scoreboard above center ice and a stirring rendition of the national anthem, which was started by long-time Bruins vocalist Rene Rancourt. He sang a few lines then gestured for the fans to join in ? which they did.

After the game, players gathered at center ice and raised their sticks in a salute to the fans who had chanted "U.S.A." and "We are Boston."

Twitter narrows TweetDeck AIR and mobile app shutdowns to May 7th

TweetDeck for Android RIP

Twitter has been warning for weeks that it would shut down TweetDeck's AIR and mobile apps sometime in early May, but it didn't say exactly when loyalists would finally have to move on. The company now has a firm date: May 7th. In just over two weeks, Twitter will both pull the apps from their respective stores and stop existing installs from working as the service's version 1.0 API rides into the sunset. While the persisting native and web-based desktop apps will lessen some of the sting, we'd suggest that you pay your last respects if you have fond memories of TweetDeck's early apps.
