Keeping fish can be an enjoyable hobby. It is relaxing and adds aesthetic beauty to your?home. Part of being a responsible fish owner is to know the types of fish food. There are three categories of fish food, namely, live foods which are live worms, fresh insect larvae, maggots and, feeder fish; manufactured food which includes flake food, sinking and floating pellets; and the third kind is freeze dried feeds which are frozen worms, krill, brine shrimps, and the like.

Flake food is probably the most common type of food used by fish hobbyists because it is convenient and is suited for both freshwater and saltwater fish. However, it is best for top dwelling and middle water dwelling fish. Uneaten flake food can also be eaten by bottom dwellers when it settles at the bottom of the tank. Flake food is designed to have all of the nutrients and many kinds of minerals that fish need to keep them healthy. There are also several types of flakes in one single can. Always buy fresh flakes and do not store them too long to keep all the nutrients and minerals intact. Rotate the different types of flakes so that your fish won?t get bored eating the same kind. Pellet food is also designed to meet the nutritional requirements of your fish.

Live food is natural, healthy, and is sometimes cheaper. Like most fresh food, it can be healthy and provide a lot of benefits such as better coloration and more spawns for your fish. Most of the live food available is cultured in your own home if you have the time. One of the basic types of live feed that you can culture is Green Water, which is a type of algae that grows on suspended phosphates and silicates in the water column. Another is Infusoria, which is microscopic life found in most water sources.

Freeze dried feeds also make a wonderful alternative but it can be more expensive because of the process it takes. Some of the frozen kinds of fish food are Tubifex, aquatic tubificid worms from the order Oligochaete which come from mud ponds and streams and ideal for middle and bottom feeding fish, and frozen bloodworms which are Midge Fly larvae.

Whatever type of food you choose for your fish, just make sure it is appropriate and meets its nutritional requirements.
