[Product Review] Sony VAIO E15: Stylish, Competent, State of the Mainstream Art

Full Review

The Sony VAIO E15 is as stylish a mainstream laptop as you're likely to find. Starting at only $500 with a 15.5-inch screen and state-of-the-art ports and connectivity, it's an inexpensive way to impress your fellow humans with your astute judgment of things computing, as well as your fine taste in design.

Though inexpensive in its least formidable configuration--which sports an Intel Pentium B970 CPU--the VAIO E15 may be configured with faster stuff up to about $1350 (Core i7). Our "nicely configured" $700 test unit has a Core i5-3210M CPU, 6GB of system memory, a CD/DVD burner, and a 5400-rpm, 750GB hard drive. Options include a Blu-ray player, but sadly, no 7200-rpm hard drives or SSDs.

It is most likely the slowish hard drive that held the E15 in check during our testing and hands-on. As the chart below suggests, a WorldBench 7 score of 87 is a little below average even for an affordable laptop, and its subjective feel (the speed of menus and windows opening, icons being drawn, and so on) is slightly sluggish until Windows has cached icons and the like. On the other hand, 1080p video plays very smoothly, and sound through the speakers is more sonorous than with most laptops, which is to say, it's not grating. The 1.3-megapixel webcam gives a nice image as well.

Gaming frame rates delivered by the integrated Intel HD 4000 graphics are generally playable up to the 15.5-inch display's maximum 1366 by 768 resolution, but only in low detail; tougher games will require you to knock said resolution down a notch or two. The AMD Radeon HD 7550M discrete GPU that's available for either $100 (1GB of dedicated memory) or $150 (2GB of memory) will improve frame rates tremendously.

At 14.65 inches wide, 1.3 inches high, and 10 inches deep the VAIO E15 is a midsize laptop in every respect. It travels at 6.3 pounds (that includes the 0.9-pound AC adapter), and run time is an acceptable 4 hours, 14 minutes with the standard 4000mAh battery. You can increase that considerably (along with the weight) with the 5300mAh ($20) or 7950mAh ($100) batteries.

Ports on the VAIO E15 are a modern mix and include a single always-on USB 3.0 port, three USB 2.0 ports, and VGA and HDMI outputs, as well as a Kensington lock port, headphone and microphone jacks, and a gigabit ethernet port. Bluetooth 4.0 and 802.11 b/g/n Wi-Fi round out the connectivity, and the front has SD and Memory Stick ProDuo card slots.

The backlit, Chiclet-style keyboard recessed into the upper deck of the VAIO E15 is large, covering nearly the entire width of the laptop. The spacing and layout are top-notch, including the 10-key numeric keypad, though Sony has yet to emulate the magical "feel" of a Lenovo laptop. It's easy to set up a typing rhythm on the E15's keyboard, but the short key travel is apparent, and you'll never feel quite as secure on it as with a Lenovo.

The one-piece rocker touchpad is responsive, perhaps too much so. I had a difficult time avoiding accidental taps and had to turn the feature off. Less clumsy individuals will probably be fine. Design flourishes include an Assist button that turns on the laptop and initiates the software recovery software, a Web button that does the same but with Windows and your favorite browser, and the Vaio button that launches the application of your choice.

Sony loves to load software onto its laptops. Some of it is useful, powerful, and/or necessary such as the Arcsoft Webcam Suite, Cyberlink PowerDVD, and Sony's own ACID, Sound Forge Audio Studio, and Vegas Movie Studio HD Platinum 11. A lot of it such as the VAIO Gate launch application, VAIO Messenger, and VAIO Smart Network look nice but are really there to remind you which company's laptop you bought. Ditch the applets that duplicate functionality already present in the Windows 7 Home Premium operating system (Windows 7 Pro is an option), and it's remarkable how much quicker the E15 responds.

Sony's laptops are always more than the sum of their parts--a sense of style will do that for you. The VAIO E15 is no exception and will undoubtedly turn a lot of heads in the major electronics outlets. It's a great unit overall. Still, it would be even better if Sony offered a faster hard drive option.

Denon AVR-1613

Even just a few years ago, many home theater receivers required optional iPod docks that were clumsy to set up and featured primitive on-screen user interfaces. The Denon AVR-1613 ($399.99 direct) has baked-in iPod and AirPlay capability, and sits squarely in the mainstream end of Denon's lineup. It's a solid receiver and a good buy as an up-to-date centerpiece to a home theater system, even though it clearly shows signs of its 1990s-era roots.

Design, Inputs, and Features
Measuring 5.9 by 17.1 by 13.0 inches (HWD), the The AVR-1613 weighs just over 18 pounds. A front-panel USB input makes it easy to pop in a thumb drive, or access the stored contents on an iOS device while charging it simultaneously. The power cord is hardwired, which is unfortunate if it fails down the road, but it's not a big issue for a lower-priced receiver. In standby mode, Denon claims the AVR-1613 draws just one tenth of a watt.

There are five HDMI inputs?one more than the Yamaha RX-V473 ($449.99, 3.5 stars)?including a convenient port on the front, which is great for plugging in a smartphone, tablet, or laptop computer. All of the HDMI inputs support video switching, so you won't have to use two remote controls to watch different sources. There are no component or S-video inputs and outputs, though. All you get besides HDMI are two sets of composite inputs and one set of outputs, although at this point that's less of a problem than it would have been, say, two years ago. If you need these connectors, the RX-V473 is a better choice.?

AirPlay support is a recent addition. It lets you stream music over the air wirelessly from an iPhone, iPod, iPad, Apple TV, or even a computer running iTunes. Unfortunately, the AVR-1613 itself does not integrate Wi-Fi. To use AirPlay, you need to connect the receiver to your home network via a wired Ethernet connection. Pandora and Sirius XM streaming, as well as access to Denon's own radio site, which delivers more than 12,000 Internet radio stations, are all onboard.

Denon AVR-1613

The AVR-1613 is also DNLA 1.5 certified, but there's no HD Radio or even AM tuner?your only terrestrial option is FM stereo. I would have liked to see stereo Bluetooth support, especially now that Android handsets dominate smartphone sales by a significant margin. On the plus side, you'll still get better sound quality via the phone's headphone output?using an inexpensive Y-cable available at Radio Shack, as the AVR-1613 lacks a front-mounted stereo mini-jack.

The included remote control is much simpler than the one Yamaha bundles with the RX-V473. Unfortunately, it was rather stubborn in my tests. Sometimes the AVR-1613 just didn't respond to my commands, as if it were stuck thinking about the last thing I asked for.?In addition to the remote, the receiver comes with an Audyssey setup microphone for speaker calibration, a Getting Started guide, and an owner's manual in PDF format on a CD. Denon also, inexplicably, throws in a copy of Nero 9 Essentials.

Setup, Calibration, and Amplification
To get started, you'll need an HDMI cable, a set of passive speakers (either stereo or 5.1), and a TV, which you'll need for setting up the receiver and accessing the iPod interface as well as for watching movies.

On first bootup, the AVR-1613 will walk you through an on-screen setup wizard using the remote control. It asks whether you have a center channel, surround speakers, or a subwoofer. Then it offers to measure the acoustics of your room using the included microphone and a series of sound tests. You plug the setup microphone into the Setup Mic port on the front panel. From there, the system walks you through setting up your input devices (such as a Blu-ray player or Xbox 360), and then prompts you to connect to a wired network.

As a proper home theater receiver, the AVR-1613 includes five discrete channels of amplification, with each outputting 75 watts at 0.08 percent THD. Audiophiles still prefer separate preamps and amplifiers, but Denon receivers have always acquitted themselves well in terms of sound quality.

Fortunately, the Denon AVR-1613 simply sounds great?anyone concerned about the actual output will be more than pleased with this receiver. I tested the AVR-1613 with a set of Energy Take Classic 5.1 ($399, 4 stars) speakers, which includes five two-way satellites and a 200-watt, 8-inch powered subwoofer. Through the satellites, I heard clean, powerful sound at full tilt, with smooth, transparent highs and a clearly defined, three-dimensional image. The Take Classic 5.1 satellites offer 89 dB sensitivity, which isn't the most efficient design out there. But even so, the AVR-1613 had no trouble driving these to ear-splitting volumes.

To test the Denon AVR-1613's home theater prowess, I ran scenes from the the 2010 DTS Demonstration Blu-Ray Disc through the receiver, a Samsung BD-D5500 ($159.99, 3.5 stars) Blu-ray player, a Sony Bravia KDL-46EX620 ($809.99, 3.5 stars), and?the Energy Take Classic 5.1 speakers. Generally speaking, the Denon handled the job with aplomb; it sounded slightly warmer than the Yamaha RX-V473, with less treble emphasis and a slightly more full-bodied lower midrange. Even so, voices, arrow shots, and horse gallops sounded clear and distinct in Robin Hood (the 2010 film with Russell Crowe), and the Take Classic 5.1 had no problem rendering many sound sources simultaneously throughout the image. With the DTS-encoded Despicable Me, the AVR-1613 clearly separtated the rocket ship engines and low rumble while in flight, and put up clear dialog throughout.

iPod Playback and UI Issues
The AVR-1613's digital music chops need work. I plugged my iPhone into the front-mounted USB port and switched the Denon's source to iPod/USB. (Unfortunately, it doesn't work with iPads in this mode.) You can play stored iPod music two ways: In Remote Mode, which lets you control playback directly from the iPod, and Browse Mode, which puts up track and artist info on the screen, and lets you select it using the Denon's remote control. I tested the iPod playback with two devices: the aforementioned iPhone, and a 4th-generation iPod nano. Both worked, although the AVR-1613 was temperamental. Sometimes it played music back fine; other times, it remained stuck at the beginning of the song.

A firmware update became available toward the end of the review period, which promised to take 21 minutes to install. Excited by the prospect of eliminating the bugs, I installed it?only to see that the on-screen menu text, already buggy, pixelated, and slightly wobbly, became downright unreadable on the music playback screen. Everything looked doubled; rebooting the monitor and the receiver didn't help. Worse, iPod playback was buggier than before. Once, it started a song at full blast, threatening to deafen me and blow out the speaker system. It wouldn't respond to the volume dial, and wouldn't even shut off with the power switch; I had to hold it down for five seconds to get the receiver to power down. (Next up would have been pulling the plug.) It didn't do this again, but the intermittent playback issues continued.

AirPlay and Conclusions
On the plus side, AirPlay connectivity worked great. Once I configured the unit over wired Ethernet, I had no problem streaming music from various AirPlay-compatible devices to the AVR-1613. The receiver displays album art on screen whenever available, which is something the Yamaha RX-V473 doesn't do. Pandora playback also worked well; I logged in with my account, started several of my stations, and listened to uninterrupted streaming Internet radio.

I also tested Denon's free iOS remote control app, which works with the AVR-1613 and other networked receivers from the company. It does the job, but it has a very confusing UI?it took plenty of tapping and head-scratching to figure out where everything was. Yamaha's free iOS app is much more thoughtfully designed, although actual functionality differences between the two are less than they appear once you figure out where Denon hid the source select, DSP modes, and other playback and setup controls.

All told, the Denon AVR-1613 makes a solid centerpiece to a proper home theater system in 2012. But thanks to its lack of Wi-Fi and its rudimentary display graphics, there's a bit of a disconnect between 1980s and 1990s-style home theater components, and the complex, fragmented world that is music listening today. So while the AVR-1613 could use more refinement, it's impressively well specified otherwise, and should let you do just about anything you'd want with a home theater setup today.

You Take Your College Football Playoff And GET OFF MY LAWN

Take your playoffs and get off my lawn. (Warning, NSFW language in clip)

I know that I am in the minority about the evolution of a college football playoff, and most people can't see why a playoff is a bad thing.

And I'll even concede to the playoff proponents that the tradition of the Rose Bowl, or the tradition of bowls in general, which is usually one of the pillars that form the anti-playoff argument, has already been pissed on when the Rose Bowl joined the BCS, and the bowls in general became nothing more than corporate advertising that just happened to have a football game attached to it..

No, my problem is that with evolution, things continue to evolve, and what we have today won't be what we have in a few years. Be it 10, 15, or 30, it's going to change, and not for the better.

After the jump.

Star-divide

Now, before you decry that I'm just a stodgy old guy that can't stand change, well, you're partially right. Or I obviously wouldn't be writing about my opposition to a playoff. I do think some change is good, like the B1G moving to 12 teams, adopting divisions, and holding a conference championship game. All of that has been fantastic, both for the game and for the conference.

Luke Zimmerman, one of the best writers not only on SB Nation but in sports today, did a tongue in cheek post about how a playoff has ruined college football, just like things such as the line of scrimmage and the forward pass did...which they obviously didn't. But that got me thinking about how the game evolved, and I think in this instance, the continued evolution will not be for the betterment of the game, unlike the things Luke mentioned in his post.

Right now, the BCS is reviled as a way of picking a 'true' champion. Whether it's the bias in the polls, comparing strength of schedules for multiple one loss teams, or continued slighting of non-AQ schools, almost no one is happy with the BCS process.

My, how times have changed. Just 14 years ago, when the BCS was announced, it seemed to be the perfect solution. All the major conferences with automatic bowl tie-ins would release their conference champion to play a #1 vs. #2 to decide a 'true' national champion. People hailed this as something that would once and for all remove all doubt as to who the true champion would be.

Fast forward to today. No one is happy with the BCS, because most years, we have trouble coming to a consensus on who the best two teams are, and that's because there are usually two or three teams that can lay claim to the #2 spot.

So, the thought goes, expanding to a four team playoff solves all the problems, and people are hailing this as almost the perfect solution. We'll have a national semifinal, then a championship game, and by God, now there won't be any doubt as to who the best team is.

Really? Those that fail to learn from history are doomed to repeat it, I guess.

All this will do is expand the list of teams that think they should be teams #3 and #4. I just see this as nothing more as rehash of the same arguments we currently have, only on a much bigger and messier scale. With a four team playoff, you'll now have six or seven teams arguing that they should be in the semifinals.

And with the advent of school conference television networks and the revenue they'll provide, ESPN and the mega contracts they are churning out, and the absolute insane money a playoff promises, these arguments will only get more intensive and cut throat going forward.

And the only solution, the talking heads will proclaim, will be further expansion, just like they are now.

Stewart Mandel just did a column talking about how great New Year's Eve and New Year's Day will be again, with all 12 seeded teams playing each other.

Wait, what?

Yeah, there are going to be teams seeded 1-12...to help determine the best bowls outside the semi-finals, but including the top 4 teams. Noooope, doesn't sound like the groundwork for a playoff expansion is already being laid down. Not at all:

As was announced Tuesday, six bowls will rotate hosting the two semifinal games over a 12-year period, with a selection committee choosing the participants based on record, strength of schedule and other criteria. But the committee's work won't end there -- they'll be selecting the pool for the other four bowls as well.

"They will rank the teams much like the basketball committee seeds the teams. We don't know how many they will rank -- 12, 15, 20, somewhere in that range -- but that ranking will be used to identify who will be filling the [four] games that are not hosting the semifinals. That's the concept."

In other words, the best teams will play in the best bowls, and theoretically, as many as five of the six games could pit Top 10 teams against one another, and it's possible, though not automatic, that the six games will pit the Top 12 teams. [ED: Quotes within this quoteblock are from BCS Director Bill Hancock]

So what they're doing to determine the teams...is exactly what they're doing now, basically. Oh, it will be by a selection committee, but they will be using largely the same factors that the BCS uses to determine the current rankings.

And NO ONE LIKES HOW THEY SELECT TEAMS RIGHT NOW. How does this solve anything, again?

And Mandel, trying to gin up excitement for this new system, gives a hypothetical schedule of what we'll see, using last year's teams and bowls. But in so doing, he makes my argument for me:

Dec. 31, 1 p.m. Chick-fil-A: No. 11 Clemson (10-3) vs. No. 13 Baylor (9-3)

Dec. 31, 4:30 p.m. Cotton: No. 9 South Carolina (10-2) vs. No. 10 Boise State (11-1)

Dec. 31, 8 p.m. Fiesta: No. 2 Oklahoma State (11-1) vs. No. 3 Alabama (11-1)

Jan. 1, 1 p.m. Sugar: No. 6 Arkansas (10-2) vs. No. 7 Kansas State (10-2)

Jan. 1, 5 p.m. Rose: No. 5 Stanford (11-1) vs. No. 8 Wisconsin (11-2)

Jan. 1, 8:30 p.m. Orange: No. 1 LSU (13-0) vs. No. 4 Oregon (10-2)

Obviously, it's impossible to say exactly how the committee's rankings would have differed from the BCS standings, but I elevated Oklahoma State (from No. 3 to No. 2), Oregon (No. 4 to 5), Wisconsin (No. 10 to No. 8) and Clemson (No. 15 to No. 11) for their conference championships and/or head-to-head wins over similarly ranked foes and downgraded Boise State (from No. 7 to No. 10) for poor strength of schedule. We also don't know if there would be an at-large selection order or a teams-per conference limit (the SEC placed four in this lineup).

And Mandel makes his arguments as to why he changed teams around. Why is a 10-2 Oregon chosen over a 10-2 Kansas State or Wisconsin? Yes, I know Oregon beat Wisconsin in the Rose Bowl, but before they played, which would've been the point in time when this schedule was made out, you could make an argument that Wisconsin was just as deserving--BCS conference champion, 11 wins, potent offense, just like Oregon. For that matter, Stanford was a 1 loss team that won the conference Oregon was in, why not them? Oh, and Boise State, at 11-1, suffered their annual screw job.

See what I mean?

So the next logical step...evolution, if you will...will be to say 'hey, let's just take these 12 teams (or 16, or 8, whatever) and make an X team playoff. And you're still going to have controversy as to who is in and who isn't.

And one of the unintended consequences, I fear, will be a gravitation towards four or five 'super conferences', which will ostensibly be to help minimize the wailing about who the final four teams are. But I think many people, at least here on OTE, took a step back when expansion ended for us. At the time, we were kind of caught up in the moment about a 16 team super conference--it was fun to think about and speculate on. But upon further reflection, 16 teams would be too big. With 12, certain rivalries are already on a semi-hiatus (Wisconsin-Iowa), but that seems to be okay, especially since Nebraska will develop some great rivalries in the B1G over time.

But 16 teams? You're going to have the long time rivalry dilution without any serious back-fill, regardless of who the B1G might add. Sure, Notre Dame (assuming they would join, and that's no guarantee) would be everyone's rival, but what about the other three teams? Would their addition...whoever they are...make up for the loss of a Minnesota-Wisconsin type rivalry? It seems foolish to think that these sacrosanct rivalries wouldn't be played on an annual basis, but with 16 teams, it's almost certain that one long standing rivalry will be sacrificed 'for the greater good'. But it's not for the greater good.

And to those of you that say 'well, they'll never expand past the four teams', I'm going to ask you to do a little research, because I have and haven't found it: Find any major North American sport that hasn't expanded their playoff format, and tell me if it was for the greater good of the game. The NFL still has the best sports product in the world, but a 10-6 wildcard team can sneak in on the last week of the regular season, get hot, and win it all. No one, except the most ardent fans of the NHL and the NBA gives two hoots in hell about those sports until the playoffs, and after the first weekend of the NCAA tournament, the only people left caring are fans with teams left standing.

One of the things I love about college football is the uniqueness of the bowls, but I understand that the original purpose has been overtaken by money and corporate sponsorship, and that with the huge amount of money at stake, it's never going to go back to the way it was.

And that's a shame, in many different ways.

Now, all of you playoff proponents, get the HELL OFF MY LAWN.

Know More about the Various Types of Fish Food

Fish

Fish

Keeping fish can be an enjoyable hobby. It is relaxing and adds aesthetic beauty to your?home. Part of being a responsible fish owner is to know the types of fish food. There are three categories of fish food, namely, live foods which are live worms, fresh insect larvae, maggots and, feeder fish; manufactured food which includes flake food, sinking and floating pellets; and the third kind is freeze dried feeds which are frozen worms, krill, brine shrimps, and the like.

Flake food is probably the most common type of food used by fish hobbyists because it is convenient and is suited for both freshwater and saltwater fish. However, it is best for top dwelling and middle water dwelling fish. Uneaten flake food can also be eaten by bottom dwellers when it settles at the bottom of the tank. Flake food is designed to have all of the nutrients and many kinds of minerals that fish need to keep them healthy. There are also several types of flakes in one single can. Always buy fresh flakes and do not store them too long to keep all the nutrients and minerals intact. Rotate the different types of flakes so that your fish won?t get bored eating the same kind. Pellet food is also designed to meet the nutritional requirements of your fish.

Live food is natural, healthy, and is sometimes cheaper. Like most fresh food, it can be healthy and provide a lot of benefits such as better coloration and more spawns for your fish. Most of the live food available is cultured in your own home if you have the time. One of the basic types of live feed that you can culture is Green Water, which is a type of algae that grows on suspended phosphates and silicates in the water column. Another is Infusoria, which is microscopic life found in most water sources.

Freeze dried feeds also make a wonderful alternative but it can be more expensive because of the process it takes. Some of the frozen kinds of fish food are Tubifex, aquatic tubificid worms from the order Oligochaete which come from mud ponds and streams and ideal for middle and bottom feeding fish, and frozen bloodworms which are Midge Fly larvae.

Whatever type of food you choose for your fish, just make sure it is appropriate and meets its nutritional requirements.

Create Unlimited Cash with Your Travel Business | www.cooltides.com

Create Unlimited Cash with Your Travel Business PhotoTravel in the United States and to other parts of the world is growing by leaps and bounds. It?s easier than ever to travel by plane, cruise ship, bus, or car, and many people are taking advantage of modern-day travel conveniences.

Unfortunately, this $8.5 trillion industry is not without fault. Fuel costs and other factors have taken a toll on travel prices, but can actually benefit your business. If you?re already in the travel business or thinking of starting a travel venture, now may be the best time ever to cash in on what seems to be a disadvantage to many travelers. Since everyone loves travel (even when it is expensive), you can create unlimited cash while helping others take their dream vacation for fewer dollars.

Unlimited Travel Opportunities

If you?ve always loved to travel and want to help others plan their vacations, there are unlimited travel opportunities to help you start a travel business. With a travel business, you not only create unlimited cash for your own income, but you can also plan unlimited vacations of your own with a tremendous discount. Then, you can use your own travel experiences to help others find the perfect vacation. You can also offer the discounts to your family and friends.

With some travel business models, you can sign on to be a travel representative (not an agent) and offer the travel packages at a discount with huge commissions paid out directly to you. And the real advantage of these types of opportunities is you can usually sign others up to sell travel packages as well. You will receive instant profits when they sign on as well as when they sell vacation packages to others. It?s a great way to travel to exotic places while earning unlimited cash through your very own travel business.

How to Sell Travel Packages

There are a number of ways to realize your dreams with a travel business. You can use the Web, magazines, or classifieds to target niche markets in the travel industry. For example, target people who want to visit a certain country or city. You can target families or honeymooners. You can target business travelers. With a website, you can add unlimited travel articles to your website to attract readers who are interested in visiting certain places around the world. You can also create a travel newsletter or e-zine to capture the e-mails of your site visitors. The travel industry is broad, so the more targeted your marketing efforts, the faster your business will grow.

How to Offer the Opportunity to Others

You?d be surprised at how many people would love to start a travel business, but don?t know how or where to start. Once you gain some experience in your travel business, you?ll be able to offer tips and helpful resources for others who want to do the same. Also, don?t ignore those who are seeking ?any? business opportunity. Many people want to work from home, but aren?t sure what type of business to try. You can educate them about starting a travel business, and build their confidence to try it out. Be a motivator and a helper, and you?ll soon see tremendous results!

Each time you travel, write down key points and attractions of the places you visit. Offer articles about first-hand travel experiences on your website along with photos. Annan calls for Syria interim government: diplomats

Peace envoy Kofi Annan is proposing a transitional government for Syria including members from both sides of the country's war, diplomats said.

The call came after UN investigators reported on atrocities committed inside the country, where rights groups say more than 15,000 people have been killed since an uprising began against President Bashar al-Assad.

Monitors tracking the violence said the last week had been the bloodiest since the fighting started, as a deadly attack on a pro-government television station sparked international outrage.

Annan's proposed interim authority would exclude officials whose presence might jeopardise the transition "or undermine efforts to bring reconciliation," according to a summary given by one UN diplomat.

The major powers -- the US, Britain, France, China and Russia, a key Assad ally -- generally back the plan that will be discussed at a meeting of foreign ministers Annan has convened in Geneva on Saturday, the diplomats said.

"The language of Annan's plan suggests that Assad could be excluded but also that certain opposition figures could be ruled out," said a second UN diplomat, while stressing that there was nothing there that automatically excluded him.

"Russia's acceptance of this plan could be a new sign that it is ready to let Assad go," said the diplomat.

But Russia's UN ambassador Vitaly Churkin said there was no guarantee that Annan's document would be agreed to in Geneva.

"Whatever Kofi Annan is going to prepare is going to be basis of discussion for the ministers," he told reporters.

Turkey, Qatar, Kuwait and Iraq will also be at the meeting, but Iran and Saudi Arabia were not invited.

Both Annan and UN leader Ban Ki-moon had wanted Iran to take part in the talks, as had Russia. But the United States and European nations had opposed the Islamic state's involvement.

Speaking in Helsinki on Wednesday, US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said she had been in regular contact with Annan over his transition plan, without saying what it contained.

"We think it embodies the principles needed for any political transition in Syria that could lead to a peaceful, democratic and representative outcome reflecting the will of the Syrian people," she added.

In Geneva, United Nations investigators who had visited Syria reported back to a meeting of the UN Human Rights Council Wednesday on the toll the 15-month conflict was taking on the country.

Attacks were becoming increasingly sectarian in nature, the commission of inquiry (CoI) report said.

"Where previously victims were targeted on the basis of their being pro- or anti-government... a growing number of incidents... appear to have been targeted because of their religious affiliation," said the report.

That prompted a walk-out by the Syrian delegation, with ambassador Faisal Khabbaz Hamoui denouncing a "war of disinformation against Syria".

The report also gave its findings on the the massacre in the central town of Houla where at least 108 people were killed over a 24-hour period on May 25-26.

"The CoI is unable to determine the identity of the perpetrators at this time, nevertheless the CoI considers that forces loyal to the government may have been responsible for many of the deaths," it said.

It did not however rule out the possibility that anti-government forces might have been involved, as the Damascus regime has alleged.

The commission also said snipers had killed a large number of children, and it spoke of multiple reports of rape and sexual assault after government forces entered the Baba Amr neighbourhood of Homs in February.

Wednesday's attack on the offices of Al-Ikhbariya television near Damascus killed three journalists and four security staff, state media reported.

"The terrorist groups stormed the offices of Al-Ikhbariya, planted explosives in the studios and blew them up along with the equipment," Information Minister Omran al-Zohbi said from the scene.

Live footage broadcast by state television showed extensive damage to the studios. Al-Ikhbariya itself remained on air despite the assault.

"They carried out the worst massacre against the media, executing journalists and security staff," Zohbi said. A number of staff had also been kidnapped, he added.

The US condemned the attack and rights group including Amnesty International condemned the attack.

"We condemn all acts of violence including those targeting pro-regime elements," White House spokesman Jay Carney said.

Amnesty International's Middle East and North Africa deputy director Ann Harrison said: "Even a media organisation engaged in propaganda is still a civilian object, so it and those working for it must never be deliberately targeted."

At least 82 more people were killed inside Syria Wednesday, including the victims of the attack on the television station and 40 other civilians, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported.

Observatory chief Rami Abdel Rahman told AFP that 916 people had been killed between June 20 and 26, making the period "the bloodiest week of the Syrian Revolution".

More than 15,800 people have been killed in the uprising which erupted in March 2011, the Observatory said, 4,681 of them since a ceasefire previously proposed by Annan was supposed to take effect on April 12.

Italy's 3 injured players making progress

Associated Press Sports

updated 2:57 p.m. ET June 26, 2012

KRAKOW, Poland (AP) -Italy midfielder Daniele De Rossi and defenders Giorgio Chiellini and Ignazio Abate are undergoing treatment for injuries and are hoping to return for Thursday's European Championship semifinal with Germany.

"All three are making progress and we will do everything possible, right down to the last minute, to make them available," team doctor Enrico Castellacci said Tuesday.

De Rossi has a problem with his sciatic nerve that is affecting his left foot, and left Sunday's penalty shootout win over England in the 80th minute.

Italy's football federation said later Tuesday that De Rossi would appear at a news conference the following day, a move that usually indicates a player will be used in the next game.

Abate has a muscle problem in his left leg and Chiellini has a left hamstring problem.

Abate's replacement Christian Maggio picked up a yellow card that rules him out of Thursday's match in Warsaw.

Italy required extra time and the shootout to beat England in the quarterfinals on Sunday and has two days' fewer rest than Germany entering the semifinals.

"There is a general state of fatigue in the squad," Castellacci said. "That's to be expected after the stress and emotion of the last few matches. We're doing everything possible to recuperate our energy."

Positive Personality Traits: Will It Help You Succeed?

Positive personality traits are important because it will influence the way you act and react to business challenges. It will help you how to run your business and attract more customers.

Internet business success is not rewarded for just showing up. It needs more than technicalities. I am amazed at some owners who could let personality shine through their work, which made them great. If you want to stand out from thousands of internet marketers trying to succeed online, you have to possess the following positive personality traits:

Sense of Entitlement

It is unrealistic to expect to succeed in your internet business without sacrifice and commitment. If you can count on anything, it is the fact that your efforts will not always give the results you expect. You must invest of yourself to achieve the desired effort. You must be observant, and patient enough to make the necessary adjustments.

Fear of Taking Chances

Fear is good but don?t allow it to keep you from taking chances, or you will be left behind. The very nature of internet business is change and chance so decisions will have to be made, and chances have to be taken.

Patient

It will help you succeed if you are patient. Don?t be consumed with the opportunity to earn a quick buck. Be tolerant. It takes time to get the hang of learning new ethical principles of internet business strategy.

Analytical

If you have an analytical mind and are able to think fast, you can capitalize on opportunities.

Selfless

Don?t get involved with internet business because you were laid off, or hate your current job. This is the time to reach out and help others. If you focus your energy in helping your target market achieve solutions to their problems, the more you will get back.

Sensitive

You must have the positive personality traits to be aware of how your business should affect others. If you are susceptible to your market, they will understand you better, value your input and respect you. People will be comfortable to contact you with sensitive issues relating to their product and service.

Sense of Integrity

Our sense of integrity represents our ethics, values, and actions that manifest our character. Integrity is hard to find because most people are only after making a quick sale or two. Many businesses exist to feed the hype and lie to take your money and run. Getting rich quick is all about short-term success goals. It takes legitimate business, hard work, determination and integrity to succeed.

Genuine

Internet businesses take more emphasis on being superficial and living up to the hype. Marketers gloat and flaunt about the millions of dollars they?ve earned. They forgot that real people also want to do business with genuine people. If you?re authentic in your business, you will have the ability to be unique. Let your personality flow through your business. It takes a lot of strength to tell your audience about the mistakes and lessons you have learned.

Our positive personality traits make up who we are and nobody can clone it. Working online should be a learning experience. Persistence and the ability to correct our action is the most positive personality traits. Nothing in the world can take its place, not even talent or genius.

Importance of Genuine SEO Techniques | Internet Marketing ...

Localized searches on search engines are becoming more and more popular within the Area SEO community. Customers are choosing to use Search engines including Google, Yahoo, MSN, AOL, and the rest over his or her traditional paper Yellow Pages. It takes too much time and effort these days to start the Paper directory and search and search alphabetically for the business you desire to find.

All of which provide links back to your website. So once you have around thirty articles out there the links can grow exponentially. Merely consider what can happen if you have one hundred articles published? 190 articles?

The magic figure is said by some experts with this field to be 250 articles, it is then that this exponential rise in links and traffic to your site can be truly seen. I wouldn?t have personal experience of this yet as my own figure is located at 35 and this number is already having remarkable final results as reported in a prior article. If you average 10 articles a month which is just what my own aim is, then after 2 years you will have achieved this magic figure involving 250.

You may promote your blog with real SEO, and that will rank your web site higher than any SEO company can do. So, it is extremely essential that you do it yourself. Set apart a while in your daily schedule to build hyperlinks with any niche sites you know of. Also, inquire your friends who have blogs them selves in the same subject to url into your site.

Patience is the vital thing element in promoting your website. If you need your site to climb up through the rankings then you must have tolerance. Do not be swayed into parting with money on the commitment of instant high rankings. They can be accomplished but will not be permanent and also on Google in particular this is becoming increasingly more difficult to achieve as the criteria becomes more complex.

Why do you have to be patient? Yahoo in particular requires a little persistence. Google likes to see quality one way links pointing back to your site and can only count and use backlinks after they have matured for a long time. So your articles may not appear as links for about 8 weeks and then as they mature more they will assume more and more value in the eyes of Google.

Consequently maybe you have 100 recorded backlinks however another site with merely 50 backlinks is still graded higher. This is presumably because of your links being still small and not ?fully matured?. Once they do so you are going to leap ahead.

With Yahoo the situation is similar but the time delay is actually less. You should start to see these links appearing after probably 2 ? 3 weeks.

Every search engine, Google included, searches for only the content. Content is the most important thing to rank high in search engines. Without having content, your site is just another internet site, without much importance. So produce good genuine content.

Should you optimize your website using badly chosen keywords, your end consequence may be increased online traffic, and not bringing the specific type of guest you had in mind, so it is really critical to get this right, your entire other optimization efforts are relying on the initial keyword terms you at long last decide on.

Turkey aims for NATO help with Syria (+video)

Following Syria's downing of a Turkish jet on Friday, officials in Turkey are looking to NATO for assistance. Syrian officials claim their act was one of self-defense. ??

By Jon Hemming,?Reuters / June 25, 2012

Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan, right, arrives for a cabinet meeting in his office in Ankara, Turkey. Upon Turkey's request, NATO will hold a meeting Tuesday in Brussels over article 4 of its charter concerning Friday's incident, when a Turkish warplane was shot down by Syria.

Turkey is to demand backing from its NATO allies on Tuesday at a special meeting called after Syrian troops shot down a Turkish warplane last week in an incident Damascus said was self-defence but which Ankara branded an "act of aggression".

Sarah Irwin reports.

It is only the second time in NATO's 63-year history that it has convened under Article 4 of its charter which provides for consultations when a member state feels its territorial integrity, political independence or security is under threat.

Turkey rejected assertions from Damascus that its forces had no option but to fire on the F-4 jet as it flew over Syrian waters close to the coast on Friday.
In a letter to the U.N. Security Council, Turkey condemned the "hostile act by the Syrian authorities against Turkey's national security", saying it posed "a serious threat to peace and security in the region".

Deputy Prime Minister Bulent Arinc told a news conference Syria's actions "would not go unpunished".

The incident has further heightened tensions between Turkey and Syria already strained to near breaking point over the 16-month uprising against Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's rule.

Though not known for his restraint, Turkish Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan has so far been measured in his response, perhaps due to Western reluctance to commit to any military action and wary himself of anything that could trigger a regional sectarian war.

European Union foreign ministers called on Monday for Turkey to show restraint, saying they would increase pressure on Assad.

"Military intervention in Syria is out of the question," said Dutch Foreign Minister Uri Rosenthal.

After a seven-hour Turkish cabinet meeting in which an air force chief gave a detailed briefing on Friday's incident, Arinc said Erdogan would make an announcement on Syria on Tuesday.

Syria's description of the event as an act of self defence, though tempered with commitment to a "neighbourly relationship", seemed likely to further anger Ankara.

Act of Defence?

"The plane disappeared and then reappeared in Syrian airspace, flying at 100 metres altitude and about 1-2kms (0.6-1.2 miles) from the Syrian coast," Syrian Foreign Ministry spokesman Jihad Makdissi told a Damascus news conference.

"We had to react immediately, even if the plane was Syrian we would have shot it down," he said. "The Syrian response was an act of defence of our sovereignty carried out by anti-aircraft machinegun which has a maximum range of 2.5 km."

Syria warned Turkey and NATO against retaliating.

"NATO is supposed to be there to strengthen countries," said Makdissi. "If their meeting is for hostile reasons (they should know that) Syrian land and waters are sacred."

Poll: Supreme Court ruling on Arizona immigration may alienate Latino voters

Sixty percent of Latino voters polled in five battleground states said a Supreme Court ruling in favor of the Arizona immigration law would contribute to a hostile environment for immigrants and Latinos.

If the US Supreme Court upholds Arizona?s tough anti-illegal-immigration law this week, a majority of Latino voters in five battleground states believe the ruling will contribute to an ?anti-immigrant, anti-Hispanic environment? in the United States, according to a new poll.

' + google_ads[0].line2 + '
' + google_ads[0].line3 + '

'; } else if (google_ads.length > 1) { ad_unit += ''; } } document.getElementById("ad_unit").innerHTML += ad_unit; google_adnum += google_ads.length; return; } var google_adnum = 0; google_ad_client = "pub-6743622525202572"; google_ad_output = 'js'; google_max_num_ads = '1'; google_feedback = "on"; google_ad_type = "text"; google_adtest = "off"; google_image_size = '230x105'; google_skip = '0'; // -->

And that, in turn, could benefit Democrats, who are perceived as better than Republicans at reaching out to Latinos, according to the Latino Decisions polling group.

The Obama administration sued Arizona over its 2010 immigration law, known as SB 1070, which requires police to check the immigration status of people they stop for other reasons. Critics say the law could result in racial profiling, even though the law bans the practice. The high court could issue its ruling Monday.

Latino Decisions polled Latino voters in Arizona, Colorado, Florida, Nevada, and Virginia ? all of which have significant Latino populations and, with the exception of Republican-leaning Arizona, are seen as swing states in the November presidential race. In the poll, 60 percent said a ruling in favor of the Arizona law would contribute to a hostile environment for immigrants and Latinos, while 28 percent said upholding the law would have no effect.

?Even though the Arizona law claims to only target undocumented immigrants, the survey results show that a clear majority of US citizen Latinos who are registered to vote are also concerned about the implications of the law being upheld,? according to the report by Latino Decisions/America's Voice. ?

In all the states except Florida, a majority of Latino voters said they personally know someone who is undocumented, including 11 percent who said someone in their family is undocumented. Florida?s Latino population is dominated by people of Cuban descent, who do not face the immigration status issues of those from Mexico and other Latin American countries.

In Arizona, 65 percent of Latino voters said a Supreme Court decision upholding its anti-illegal-immigration law would create a more hostile environment toward Latinos and immigrants in their state. In neighboring Nevada, the percent holding that view was just as high. In Virginia and Florida, it was 58 percent, and in Colorado, 56 percent.

In Nevada, 74 percent of Latino voters said they know an undocumented immigrant, and 41 percent said they know someone who has faced immigration proceedings ? the highest percentages of the five states. ?

The poll was taken between June 12 and 21 and interviewed 400 voters in each state. In results from the poll released last Thursday, the survey found that President Obama leads Mitt Romney 63 percent to 27 percent in the five states. But just as important for Mr. Obama, 60 percent of the respondents now describe themselves as ?very enthusiastic? about voting in November, an increase from earlier this year. That growth in enthusiasm followed Obama?s decision to stop deporting some young undocumented immigrants.

Turkey turns to NATO over Syrian attack

ANKARA (Reuters) - Turkey has accused Syria of shooting down one of its military reconnaissance jets in international airspace without warning and summoned a NATO meeting for Tuesday to agree a response to Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.

Turkey's cabinet was due to meet on Monday to discuss Friday's incident, which lent a more threatening international dimension to the 16-month-old uprising against Assad. Britain called the attack over the eastern Mediterranean outrageous and said it stood ready to back strong action in the United Nations.

Turkish newspapers welcomed Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan's decision to invoke an article in the NATO alliance's founding treaty providing for urgent consultations if a member considered its security interests threatened.

"Turkey has moved into action" both Milliyet and Vatan newspapers declared in headlines under the NATO flag.

Sabah newspaper columnist Mehmet Barlas said some were calling Friday's attack a Syrian declaration of war. "We already know there is an 'undeclared war' being carried out between Turkey and Syria," he said, citing the presence of the Syrian opposition and Syrian refugees sheltering on Turkish soil.

Fierce fighting continued inside Syria, which has a 900 km (550 mile) border with Turkey, with rebel fighters killing dozens of soldiers in the last few days as they fought against army attacks on towns and villages in central, north and eastern Syria in the last several days, according to opposition sources.

Syrian tanks and artillery shelled the eastern city of Deir al-Zor, killing at least 20 people in the second day of heavy bombardment in the country's main oil-producing region, opposition activists said.

"Regime forces have dismantled their roadblocks from inside of Deir al-Zor after incurring heavy losses from rebels. They have withdrawn from residential areas and are now shelling the city from the outskirts. The victims are mostly civilians," a source at a hospital in Deir al-Zor told Reuters.

The official state news agency said "terrorists" abducted a state-appointed head of clerics in Deir al-Zor and blew up an oil pipeline passing through the province.

The Syrian Network for Human Rights, an opposition activists' organization that monitors the crackdown on the 16-month revolt against Assad's rule, said loyalist forces on Sunday killed another 70 people, mostly civilians and soldiers who had tried to defect, elsewhere in the country in shelling, military raids and summary executions in the provinces of Homs, Hama, Idlib, Deraa and suburbs of Damascus.

The intensification of the fighting has raised fears in Turkey of a flood of refugees and a slide into ethnic and religious warfare that could envelop the region. Ankara, like the West, is torn between a wish to remove Assad and the fear that any armed intervention could unleash uncontrollable forces.

WASHINGTON CONDEMNS ATTACK

U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton called the attack "brazen and unacceptable" and said Washington would cooperate closely with Ankara to promote a transition in Syria. Spanish government sources said European Union foreign ministers would also discuss the incident at a Luxembourg meeting on Monday.

While Turkish newspapers have railed against Assad, Erdogan, not always known for his emotional restraint, has eschewed bellicose rhetoric.

The prime minister, who turned against former ally Assad bitterly after he refused his advice to bow to demands for democratic reform, seemed to back away from any suggestion of an armed response. If he sought some kind of retaliation from the NATO meeting set for Tuesday, he could have invoked another article on mutual defense. That he did not suggests the reaction will remain at least for now on the diplomatic stage.

The foreign ministry said Turkey knew where the wreckage of the RF-4 Phantom jet lay, 1,300 meters (4,265 feet) under water, but had not yet found it. Minister Ahmet Davutoglu said the search continued for the two crew.

He said the jet had been clearly marked as Turkish and dismissed Syria's assertion it had not identified the aircraft, flying low and very fast, before opening fire.

RUSSIAN VETO

Some analysts said the aircraft could have been testing Syria's Russian-supplied radar and air defenses, which would be an obstacle to any possible Western armed action.

Russia, which along with Iran is Damascus's chief ally, has provided most of Syria's arms and has access to a deep water naval base in the country.

Davutoglu said he planned to set out Turkey's case to the U.N. Security Council where Western powers are seeking, against Russian and Chinese opposition, to push through a motion that could allow stronger measures against Assad.

Moscow has made clear it would continue to veto such a move, which it fears could undermine its interests in Syria and wreak anarchy. That apparent inevitability forces the focus for any stronger action on NATO.

Davutoglu said the jet was unarmed and had been on a solo mission to test domestic radar systems, but acknowledged it had briefly crossed Syrian airspace in the area close to both countries' maritime frontiers 15 minutes before it was hit.

"Our plane was shot at a distance of 13 sea miles from Syria's border in international airspace," Davutoglu said.

"According to the radar images, our plane lost contact with headquarters after it was hit and because the pilot lost control, it crashed into Syrian waters after making abnormal movements," he said. "Throughout this entire period no warning was made to our plane."

As if to underline its military reach, Turkey's military announced that over the last three days it had carried out air strikes in northern Iraq against nine bases for Kurdish militants fighting for greater autonomy in southeastern Turkey.
