Daily Kos: Support 32,000 women who get pregnant after rape

I for one had NO IDEA how many women get pregnant from rape. So I researched and found a study conducted by medical professors at University of South Carolina. It's shocking. 32,000 EVERY YEAR. That's a lot of suffering women.

Can ANYONE who has a ?heart support elected officials or a party who would turn these 32,000 rape victims who get pregnant every year into criminals for seeking an abortion to free them from their nightmare? This idea of making abortion illegal for them is almost like legalizing LYNCHING of young women who get raped. It's outrageous. WOuld you want your daughter to be turned into a criminal if such a tragedy would befall her? If you think you are far from it; keep in mind, one in five college women is sexually assaulted.

We must make more people are aware of these hard cold facts to shock them into reality and action and shift the beauty shop and coffee shop conversations away from the abstract talking about "sanctity of life" versus "women's rights" to how we can SUPPORT our sisters who are victims of these atrocities. If everyone understands the stark reality about rape and unwanted pregnancy, people will rally against these men who plan to keep us down and out with forced birthing. ?This is an issue all women can rally around on both sides of the aisle and a lot of good men too. ? Let's stop glossing over reality with rhetoric. Let's protect these women and all women from the hands of out of touch people like Mourdock or Romney and Ryan who are working hard to take away our rights, as well as our dollars and "sense."

Spread the facts to young women you know. ?Read these medical studies below the fold that give proof to the numbers and tell the story of women who will suffer at the hands of lawmakers if we don't step up.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE:

We attempted to determine the national rape-related pregnancy rate and provide descriptive characteristics of pregnancies that result from rape.
STUDY DESIGN:

A national probability sample of 4008 adult American women took part in a 3-year longitudinal survey that assessed the prevalence and incidence of rape and related physical and mental health outcomes.
RESULTS:

The national rape-related pregnancy rate is 5.0% per rape among victims of reproductive age (aged 12 to 45); among adult women an estimated 32,101 pregnancies result from rape each year. Among 34 cases of rape-related pregnancy, the majority occurred among adolescents and resulted from assault by a known, often related perpetrator. Only 11.7% of these victims received immediate medical attention after the assault, and 47.1% received no medical attention related to the rape. A total 32.4% of these victims did not discover they were pregnant until they had already entered the second trimester; 32.2% opted to keep the infant whereas 50% underwent abortion and 5.9% placed the infant for adoption; an additional 11.8% had spontaneous abortion.
CONCLUSIONS:

Rape-related pregnancy occurs with significant frequency. It is a cause of many unwanted pregnancies and is closely linked with family and domestic violence. As we address the epidemic of unintended pregnancies in the United States, greater attention and effort should be aimed at preventing and identifying unwanted pregnancies that result from sexual victimization.

Kenner welcomes Jefferson Parish Council with gifts, good humor ...

Mayor Mike Yenni welcomed the Jefferson Parish Council to Kenner on Wednesday. His grandfather, in the framed picture behind him, was a Kenner mayor and parish president. (Photo by The Times-Picayune archive)

Kenner welcomed the Jefferson Parish Council to City Hall on Wednesday with gifts and good humor for the parish panel's first meeting in Jefferson's most populous municipality. "I hope we don't break the fire code today," Mayor Mike Yenni told the council, which typically draws a much larger crowd to its meetings than does the City Council."

"I have some gifts for all of y'all," Yenni said, "none of which were paid for with city funds." His aides distributed notepad portfolios commemorating the meeting, keys to the city, cufflinks for the six men on the council and a pin for Councilwoman Cynthia Lee-Sheng.

Yenni was joined by City Council members Maria DeFrancesch and Kent Denapolis in thanking the Parish Council for the official visit. He noted that council Chairman Elton Lagasse grew up nearby and has much in common with his grandfather, former Mayor and Parish President Joe Yenni. Both made their marks as schoolteachers and athletic coaches before venturing into politics.

There was nothing new about conducting government business in the Kenner City Council chamber for Parish Councilman Ben Zahn. He served on the Kenner council before his election to the parish seat in 2011.

Nor is the Parish Council a stranger to several Yenni staffers who formerly worked for the parish government: Chief Administrative Officer Mike Quigley, Public Works Director Jose Gonzalez, Community Development Director Arletta Terrell and mayoral assistant Cindy Roth.

Yenni warned Parish Councilman Mark Spears Jr., whose district extends into Kenner, that Registrar of Voters Dennis DiMarco is hunting money to fix the parking lot at the registrar's new satellite office in Rivertown. DiMarco "is looking for some blacktop," Yenni said.

"He's got some money hidden," Lagasse joked.

Parish President John Young said he, too, was pleased to attend a Parish Council meeting in Kenner. "I just have one complaint: I was told there was no coffee readily available."

Perhaps he wasn't looking hard enough.

"I've got coffee," Lagasse said. "I don't know why you don't."

Hassle Free Ways To Buy And Enjoy Ice Skates

If youve decided to get involved in ice-skating, youre well on your way to enjoying an activity that can keep you in great shape, and be enjoyed in the company of others. However, at first, the mere thought of gliding across a sheet of ice, and balancing only on a set of sharp blades might seem overwhelming. By taking the time to shop for ice skates that work with your needs, and also being patient as you learn to use them, you can soon get a strong grasp on this exciting sport.

Ice Skate Purchasing Tips

When youre starting out, its understandable if youre not ready to buy ice skates from a top-of-the-line manufacturer. Although your first pair does not have to be the most expensive, take care to find some that fit well, and provide the proper support. Proper-fitting ice skates let you stay comfortable when youre on the rink, and they can help prevent injuries, as well.

If youre completely new to the sport of ice-skating, its a good idea to shop at a reputable source that offers many sizes and styles to choose from. Whether you choose to buy ice skates from a physical store, or an online merchant, dont be afraid to ask questions before finalising your purchase, especially if theres anything that youre uncertain about.

Finding Balance with Skating

As youre learning, try not to take yourself too seriously. Of course, getting off balance and falling is something that improves over time, but until you hone your skills, dont get too embarrassed over your mishaps. Everyone at the skating rink should clearly remember the challenges of learning to conquer ice skates, and youll likely find that other skaters are willing to offer support and tips.

To build a firm foundation in the basic skills, consider taking private lessons, or at least checking to see if your local rink has group skating sessions for beginners. Sometimes, even if these types of larger skating sessions dont include one-on-one instruction, a professional might oversee them, and offer pointers about your technique.

If lacing up your ice skates and heading out on the rink makes you nervous, try bringing a friend along to share in the experience. Often, simply having someone to talk to and give you an encouraging smile as you improve your skills is enough to build your confidence.

Finally, dont become overly discouraged too early in your learning process. Many people find great enjoyment in ice skates, but no one was born an expert. Keep a positive mind set and dont be afraid to ask for help from experienced skaters when you need it. Staying calm and cheerful is the key to thriving during your time as a beginning skater.

Live photo of Sony Xperia Odin C650X shows up online

Unofficially, a live photo of an unannounced Sony smartphone has showed up online, giving us just a glimpse at this upcoming smartphone. The device is called the Sony Xperia Odin C650X (this might be its codename, the final name might differ) and it has previously showed up in a leaked user agent profile.

This photo which claims to be of this upcoming smartphone does not reveal much about the device. All one can say for sure is that the device will have a huge display and a front facing camera. Regardless, the specifications have already been leaked on the web. This device is rumored to sport a 5-inch 1080p display, quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro processor and 2GB of RAM.

The Sony Xperia C650X Odin is expected to be revealed at CES 2013 in Las Vegas which will be held in coming January. It is likely that company might have a few more devices still under its sleeve which will also be revealed at CES 2013.

How highway bridges sing -- or groan -- in the rain to reveal their health: Just a drop of water can indicate the stability of a bridge

ScienceDaily (Oct. 22, 2012) ? A team of BYU engineers has found that by listening to how a highway bridge sings in the rain they can determine serious flaws in the structure.

Employing a method called impact-echo testing, professors Brian Mazzeo and Spencer Guthrie can diagnose the health of a bridge's deck based on the acoustic footprint produced by a little bit of water.

Specifically, the sound created when a droplet makes impact can reveal hidden dangers in the bridge.

"There is a difference between water hitting intact structures and water hitting flawed structures," Mazzeo said. "We can detect things you can't see with a visual inspection; things happening within the bridge itself."

The study presents a more efficient and cost-effective method to address the mounting safety concerns over bridge corrosion and aging across the U.S. and beyond.

While impact-echo testing for bridges is nothing new to engineers, the BYU researchers are the first to use water droplets to produce acoustic responses. Current testing relies on solid objects such as hammers and chains.

The idea is to detect delamination, or the separation of structural layers, in a concrete bridge deck. The most common method involves dragging a chain over a bridge and marking spots where dull, hollow sound is produced.

However, this method can take hours to carry out for a single bridge and requires lane closures that come with additional complications.

"The infrastructure in the U.S. is aging, and there's a lot of work that needs to be done," Guthrie said. "We need to be able to rapidly assess bridge decks so we can understand the extent of deterioration and apply the right treatment at the right time."

The study results, published in the October issue of Non-Destructive Testing and Evaluation International, could help transform deck surveys into rapid, automated and cost efficient exercises.

The method is as simple as dropping droplets of water on the material and recording the sound. The acoustic response indicates the health of the concrete.

"The response gives you an indication of both the size and the depth of the flaw," Mazzeo said.

Mazzeo said the method could be used to test materials beyond bridges, including aircraft composites, which are susceptible to delamination.

Though the current research is preliminary, the researchers envision a day where bridge deck surveys would take only a few moments.

"We would love to be able to drive over a bridge at 25 or 30 mph, spray it with water while we're driving and be able to detect all the structural flaws on the bridge," Mazzeo said. "We think there is a huge opportunity, but we need to keep improving on the physics."

Hasbro 3rd-qtr profit falls 4 pct, revenue drops

PAWTUCKET, R.I. (AP) ? Weakness in its boys and preschool categories globally and the stronger dollar pushed toy maker Hasbro Inc.'s third-quarter net income down by 4 percent.

But the Pawtucket, R.I.-based company's adjusted results topped Wall Street's forecasts on Monday, and it remains confident heading into the critical holiday season, which is when toy makers can earn up to 40 percent of annual revenue.

Chief Financial Officer Deborah Thomas said Hasbro was entering the holiday season with hot toys including its Marvel line and said the company plans to boost toy sales "with a significant increase in marketing support in an environment of significantly lower U.S. retail inventory." Retailers have been cautious on over-ordering toys this year and are also buying toys closer to when they are needed.

The report followed larger rival Mattel Inc.'s more upbeat third-quarter results last week. The company said its net income rose 22 percent, helped by strong sales of its Monster High Dolls and Fisher Price toys.

For the three months ended Sept. 30, Hasbro Inc. earned $164.9 million, or $1.24 per share. That compares with $171 million, or $1.27 per share, a year earlier.

Removing the impact of the stronger dollar, earnings were $1.28 per share. A reduction in the number of outstanding shares through repurchases helped boost earnings per share by about 2 cents.

Analysts, on average, expected profit of $1.20 per share, according to FactSet.

Revenue slipped 2 percent to $1.35 billion from $1.38 billion. Revenue totaled $1.39 billion excluding unfavorable foreign exchange rates. Wall Street forecast $1.38 billion, on average.

Revenue in the U.S. and Canada edged up 1 percent, helped by solid sales of girls' products and games. This was somewhat offset by weaker sales of preschool toys and boys' products. Overseas revenue fell 7 percent, hurt by the stronger dollar. When the dollar is strong, international sales translate into fewer dollars back at home.

Revenue for the entertainment and licensing segment declined 7 percent, dragged down by lower movie-related revenue.

The strongest product category for the quarter was girls' products, with revenue up 17 percent. Sales were helped by the launches of the latest Furby robotic pets and One Direction boy band dolls. New products available for the holiday season ? including interactive doll Baby Alive Baby Wanna Walk, animatronic animals Furreal Friends Baby Butterscotch and Bouncy My Happy to See Me Pup also posted strong results in the period. Well-known brands including My Little Pony and Easy-Bake also did well.

The softest category was boys, which was hurt by expected drop-offs in sales of Transformers and Beyblade, a spinning top game.

Sales in Hasbro's games category were flat. The company, which owns well known games such as Scrabble and Monopoly, has been working to turn around results in this category as more people turn to electronic games. It is launching board games based on smartphone games such as Angry Birds and Farmville, in an effort to improve results.

Hasbro said that it still expects its full-year earnings per share and revenue to climb, when stripping out the impact of foreign exchange rates.

Raleigh Little Theatre's The 39 Steps is Not for Everybody | Triangle ...

The Raleigh Little Theatre cast for ?Alfred Hitchcock?s The 39 Steps? includes (from left) Tony Hefner, Jesse R. Gephart, Staci Sabarsky, and Del Flack (photo by Curtis Brown Photography)

Any fan of the 1935 film The 39 Steps or any Alfred Hitchcock devotee should be positively delighted with Raleigh Little Theatre?s production of the play by the same name. Others, however, will likely be lost, bored, and a little overwhelmed with this excessively silly and frenzied comedy. The show follows Richard Hannay (Jesse Gephart) on a misadventure that begins when he meets a secretive woman, Annabella (Staci Sabarsky) at a theatre. He allows her to stay in his home overnight, wakes up to find that she has been murdered, and then spends the rest of the play on the run and falling into one blunder after another.

Though the beginning of the show is intriguing, things quickly go downhill. After the first six or seven ?comedic? mishaps, the production turns into one long, confusing blur with the same jokes being repeated over and over again and Hitchcock references being thrown in haphazardly. While most audience members wait patiently for the ending, which seems to never come, many at Sunday?s matinee did not return after the intermission, and it?s hard to blame them.

To be fair, the small cast (which the script calls for) gives it their all. Gephart is characteristically funny and goofy, making him perfect for his singular role. The rest of the cast, however, juggles multiple roles. Sabarsky is sometimes charming and fun to watch, taking turns as characters Annabella, Margaret, and Pamela, but her unclear accents and often-flat delivery could stand some work. Tony Hefner and Del Flack add some much needed humor (the kind that?s actually funny!) in their constantly-changing ?clown? roles.

While there are likely a few people out there who will get their kicks with this show and find it uproariously funny, most will wish they?d sat this one out. It is simply too outdated, too over-the-top, and just too silly for modern viewers.

Taxes go up next year, no matter who's president

By STEPHEN OHLEMACHER, The Associated Press

President Barack Obama isn't talking about it and neither is Mitt Romney. But come January, 163 million workers can expect to feel the pinch of a big tax increase regardless of who wins the election.

A temporary reduction in Social Security payroll taxes is due to expire at the end of the year and hardly anyone in Washington is pushing to extend it. Neither Obama nor Romney has proposed an extension, and it probably wouldn't get through Congress anyway, with lawmakers in both parties down on the idea.

Even Republicans who have sworn off tax increases have little appetite to prevent one that will cost a typical worker about $1,000 a year, and two-earner family with six-figure incomes as much as $4,500.

Why are so many politicians sour on continuing the payroll tax break?

Republicans question whether reducing the tax two years ago has done much to stimulate the sluggish economy. Politicians from both parties say they are concerned that it threatens the independent revenue stream that funds Social Security.

They are backed by powerful advocates for seniors, including AARP, who adamantly oppose any extension.

"The payroll tax holiday was intended to be temporary and there is strong bipartisan support to let that tax provision expire," said Sen. Orrin of Utah, the top Republican on the Senate Finance Committee. "The continued extension of a temporary payroll tax holiday has serious long-term implications for Social Security and, frankly, it's not even clear that it has helped to boost our ailing economy."

The question of renewing the payroll tax cut has been overshadowed by the expiration of a much bigger package of tax cuts first enacted under President George W. Bush. The Bush-era tax cuts also expire at the end of the year, and Congress is expected to try to address them after the election, in a lame-duck session.

The payroll tax cut could become part of the mix in negotiations that could go in many directions. But lawmakers in both political parties say they doubt it.

"I think there's a growing consensus that Congress and the president can't continue to divert such a critical revenue stream from Social Security," said Rep. Kevin Brady of Texas, a senior Republican on the tax-writing House Ways and Means Committee. "I think more and more Americans understand that that payroll tax cut, while politically appealing, is endangering Social Security."

Before he was named as Romney's running mate, Rep. Paul Ryan, R-Wis., disparaged the payroll tax cut, calling it "sugar-high economics" that wouldn't promote long-term growth.

Social Security is funded by a 12.4 percent tax on wages up to $110,100, rising to $113,700 in 2013. Half is paid by employers and the other half is paid by workers. For 2011 and 2012, Congress and Obama cut the share paid by workers from 6.2 percent to 4.2 percent.

A worker making $50,000 saved $1,000 a year, or a little more than $19 a week. A worker making $100,000 saved $2,000 a year.

The beauty of the tax cut is that is shows up in weekly paychecks, giving workers more money to spend or save. The downside is that some workers may not notice a $19-a-week increase in pay, making them unlikely to credit the politicians who made it happen.

Under the law, Congress is reimbursing Social Security for the lost revenue, estimated at $103 billion in 2011 and $112 billion in 2012. But Congress didn't cut spending or raise other taxes to offset the lost revenue, so the payroll tax cut is being financed with borrowed money, adding to the national debt.

Democrats are more willing to defend the tax cut, saying it helped prop up the economy during a rough stretch while providing what amounted to a 2 percent pay increase to millions of middle-income workers. But they, too, are concerned about maintaining Social Security's source of revenue.

"I think people realize that was a temporary thing," said Sen. Mark Begich, D-Alaska.

Rep. Richard Neal of Massachusetts, a senior Democrat on the Ways and Means Committee, said he thinks there is evidence that the tax cut helped the economy. But, he added, "I'm not sure that it met expectations."

House Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi of California said she, too, wants to let the tax cut expire.

Larry Summers, Obama's former economic adviser, is a lonely voice in Washington calling to extend the payroll tax cut. He said in a recent speech that the economy is too fragile to reduce workers' incomes.

Obama pushed for the tax cut in late 2010 as a way to increase workers' take-home pay to help boost consumer spending and provide a spark for the economy. Economists were divided on the economic benefits. Many said it probably helped increase consumer spending but there was no consensus on the magnitude.

The initial tax cut was for only a year, and many Republicans in Congress wanted to let it lapse at the end of 2011. But Obama and Democratic lawmakers successfully fought to extend it through 2012.

Obama, however, didn't include the tax cut in his 2013 budget proposal, and Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner told Congress this year that he saw no reason to extend it again.

White House spokeswoman Amy Brundage wouldn't rule out an extension but wouldn't commit to one, either.

"The president fought extremely hard last year in the face of Republican opposition to ensure that the payroll tax cut was extended," Brundage said. "There are a number of tax issues that Congress will have to deal with at the end of the year, this being one of them, and we will continue to evaluate all of the options available to us at that time."

Romney's campaign hammers Obama almost every day for proposing to let Bush-era tax cuts expire for individuals making more than $200,000 and married couples making more than $250,000. But Romney's tax plan would let the payroll tax cut expire, an issue he doesn't mention on the stump.

Romney's campaign declined to discuss the issue.

CNBC's Courtney Reagan reports House Democrat Chris Van Hollen is calling for extending the 2 percent payroll tax holiday; and NBC affiliate WOOD found workers at the Chevy Volt Battery's Grand Rapids plant of LG Chem may be getting paid to do nothing.

(AP) ? A man police suspected of killing three and wounding four by opening fire at a tranquil day spa was found dead Sunday afternoon following a six-hour manhunt that locked down a shopping center, country club and hospital in suburban Milwaukee.

Authorities said they believed the shooting was related to a domestic dispute. The man they identified as the suspect, Radcliffe Franklin Haughton, 45, of Brown Deer, had a restraining order against him.

Brookfield Police Chief Dan Tushaus said Haughton died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound and was found in the spa. Authorities initially believed Haughton had fled and spent much of Sunday looking for him.

The shooting happened about 11 a.m. at the Azana Day Spa, a two-story, 9,000-square-foot building across from a major shopping mall in Brookfield, a middle-to-upper class community west of Milwaukee. Hours later, a bomb squad descended on the building, and Tushaus said an improvised explosive device had been found inside. It was not clear whether it remained a threat.

Haughton's father, Radcliffe Haughton, Sr., spoke to a television station and The Associated Press shortly before police announced his son's death. In telephone interviews from Florida, he said he had last spoken to his son a few days ago, but didn't have any indication anything was wrong. He begged his son to turn himself in.

After learning of his son's death, he said, "This is very sad."

Police released little about Haughton other than a physical description and a photo.

Online court records showed a temporary restraining order was issued against him Oct. 8 in Milwaukee County Circuit Court because of a domestic abuse complaint. Haughton appeared in court Thursday, when a no-contact order was issued, and he was told to turn all his weapons over to the sheriff's department.

It was not clear who sought the restraining order, but his father said he was married.

A sea of ambulances and police vehicles collected at the scene shortly after the shooting. A witness, David Gosh of nearby West Allis, told the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel he was returning from duck hunting with his father and a friend when he saw a woman emerge from the spa, screaming, as she ran into traffic. The area is near an interstate and a busy commercial road.

"She ran right out into the street was pounding on cars," Gosh told the newspaper. Moments later, a man with a handgun ran out. He appeared to be chasing the woman but then went back inside, Gosh said.

The mall, a country club adjacent to the spa and the hospital where survivors were taken were among the buildings locked down as police searched for Haughton. At the hospital, staff members were escorted inside and critically injured patients were accepted with a police escort. Officers were stationed at all main entrances.

People inside the mall waited patiently for updates during the lockdown. Gina Kralik, a bartender at Red Robin Gourmet Burgers in the mall, said people had been allowed to leave at one point but then police had decided not to let anyone come or go from the mall.

"We're just sitting watching the news and also trying to find out what's going on," she said about 3 p.m.

Austin Della, 17, was working in Boston Store, when he heard announcements over the loudspeaker asking people to move their cars out of one of the mall's lots. The mall was then locked down for almost three hours, he said, and customers joked about the good service they would get as the only clients in the whole store.

"Everyone was really calm," Della said. "If not for all the announcements, I don't think anyone would have known that anything was happening."

It was the second mass shooting in Wisconsin this year. Wade Michael Page, a 40-year-old Army veteran and white supremacist, killed six people and injured three others before fatally shooting himself Aug. 5 at a Sikh temple south of Milwaukee.

The shooting at the mall took place less than a mile from where seven people were killed and four wounded on March 12, 2005, when a gunman opened fire at a Living Church of God service held at a hotel.

Men's Soccer Drops Ninth in a Row | Sports & Recreation | Arlington ...

The UNF men?s soccer team has now lost nine games in a row, the ninth coming at the feet of the top ranked Mercer Bears, 3-0. The loss on Oct.18 exceeds the number of years in a two-term presidency, and continues the deterioration of a season that started out promising, with the Ospreys winning three of its first five matches.

If you were to hear head coach Derek Marinatos tell it, UNF?(3-11, 0-5-0 A-Sun)?isn?t too far off from being on the winning side of nine matches in a row, the exception being two matches in California against UC-Riverside and San Diego State in which the Ospreys gave up a combined 14 goals and scored zero.

One residual problem remains constant during the streak, which includes five losses in five conference games, and that issue is that shots just aren?t falling. The Thursday night match provided no exception, as A-Sun leaders Mercer (9-4-1, 4-0-0 A-Sun)?blanked UNF.

Romney says Obama playing 'silly word games'

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (AP) ? Republican Mitt Romney is accusing President Barack Obama of engaging in "petty attacks and silly word games" just 18 days before the election.

Romney on Friday rallied a raucous crowd in Daytona Beach, Fla., saying Obama was running a small campaign.

Earlier in the day, Obama joked that a case of "Romnesia" was preventing Romney from remembering his own policy positions.

The Republican also accused Obama of having no second-term agenda. He dubbed Obama's bid, quote, "the incredible shrinking campaign."

Romney campaigned with running mate Paul Ryan. A colorful crowd of thousands greeted them ? Daytona Beach is hosting its annual Biketoberfest, drawing motorcycle riders from across the country.

Romney will head to Boca Raton, Fla., on Saturday to continue preparations for Monday's debate.

GM to hire 3000 workers from Hewlett-Packard - Idaho Statesman

? General Motors will hire 3,000 workers from Hewlett-Packard, part of a push to bring most of its computer technology in-house.

The HP employees, who already work on GM projects, will help the automaker toward a larger goal: improving the software technology it puts in cars and uses to run its business.

Thursday's announcement is the latest in series of technology moves at GM. The company plans to hire 10,000 programmers and software experts over the next three to five years. It also wants to shift technology work from outside firms into GM and to open four new IT centers.

The former HP workers will help GM consolidate 23 global data centers into two. And they'll try to cut GM's software applications by 40 percent so the company uses more common programs and becomes more efficient, said GM Chief Information Officer Randy Mott.

They'll also find ways to automate a number of corporate functions, saving GM money that will be spent on electronic innovation, Mott said. Once the automation is done, workers will shift to developing software and dreaming up new dashboard devices.

Mott said the employee switch is about GM's needs and has nothing to do with HP's plans to cut 29,000 jobs by October of 2014. Most of the new HP hires are in the U.S., but some are overseas.

HP, based in Palo Alto, Calif., is the world's largest maker of personal computers. It has been hurt as consumers shift away from PCs to smartphones and tablets.

HP is preparing to release a new line of tablets and has been trying to diversify into more profitable lines of technology, such as business software and consulting.

Bounty offered for Al-Qaida 'facilitators'

The State Department announced today it is now offering multi-million dollar rewards for information that leads to the capture of two alleged high-level members of al Qaeda based in Iran.

Under its Rewards for Justice program, the State Department is willing to pay up to $7 million for information leading to the capture of al Qaeda "senior facilitator and financier" Muhsin al-Fadhli, and another $5 million for the location of his deputy, Adel Radi Saqr al-Wahabi al-Harbi.

In addition to being linked to past terrorist incidents - al-Fadhli allegedly knew about the 9/11 terror attacks before the planes struck the World Trade Center - the two are accused of moving fighters and funding through Turkey and into Syria, which is in the midst of a bloody civil war.
