Giants not planning to use Cabrera in postseason

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) ? The San Francisco Giants have no plans to bring back suspended outfielder Melky Cabrera for the postseason if the club is still playing when he is eligible to return.

Manager Bruce Bochy said Tuesday that he and general manager Brian Sabean are meeting to finalize their 25-man roster for the best-of-five division series. Cabrera would be allowed to play in the NLCS if the Giants advance that far, but ? at this stage, at least ? they have no intention of adding him to the roster at any point in the postseason.

An announcement regarding Cabrera is expected before the NL West champions leave town after a three-game series against Arizona that began Tuesday night.

First, they would need to alert all the parties involved: Cabrera, Major League Baseball and the players union. Cabrera can start working out at instructional league in Arizona 10 days before his suspension ends, so that factor weighs into the mix.

"Right now, we'll discuss that. We'll probably have something before the end of this homestand as far as Melky," Bochy said. "We're talking about a lot of things, and that's one of them. I'll probably have an answer for you before we leave here to go down to San Diego. I think both on our side and Melky's side, you're getting down to the time period where he can start working out and doing some things. I think he needs to know and we need to know."

San Francisco's 40-man roster is full, so when Cabrera is eligible to be reinstated the Giants would have to make a roster move. They could keep Cabrera on the 40-man roster just in case.

Cabrera, the All-Star game MVP, is batting .346, which is the highest mark in the National League.

He was suspended for 50 games Aug. 15 for a positive testosterone test. On Friday, Cabrera asked to be removed from contention for the batting crown, saying he had no wish to win a tainted title.

The Giants have succeeded without Cabrera's big bat, clinching their second division crown in three seasons Saturday night against San Diego. And they are pushing ahead with the roster they have.

"Right now, we're focusing on the future and what's going to happen, the playoffs. We're not thinking about that," center fielder Angel Pagan said. "They'll make the decisions. We are the soldiers. If they bring him, we're teammates. We'll receive him with open arms. But if not, hey, we've got to respect the decision and move on, move forward."

Reliever Jeremy Affeldt has said he wants to fight with the faces who are currently in the clubhouse ? as they've done just fine in the month-plus playing without Cabrera.

"Exactly, and I'm sure that's the way the team thinks, too," Pagan said. "I respect any decision that the team makes. We have a job to do. And we have the mentality to go out there and finish the season strong and start the playoffs the right way."

Catcher Buster Posey said the Giants will accept whatever the front office decides regarding Cabrera, who is set to become a free agent after the season.

"I don't think it would bother us than just the extra questions," he said. "That would be the main thing, the extra questions."

Posey's .332 batting average was third in the NL behind Cabrera and Pittsburgh's Andrew McCutchen (.336) entering games Tuesday night. Cabrera was batting .346 with 11 home runs and 60 RBIs in his first season with San Francisco and is five hits shy of 1,000 in his big league career.

"I've been outspoken on the penalties. If he serves his suspension and pays the price, whatever it is, you guys know I spoke out and said I think there needs to be more of a deterrent, but if he serves his penalty, I guess I'm really not against it. That's their decision," Arizona manager Kirk Gibson said. "If he's caught again, I think he should be done."

AP Exclusive: Neglect ruins Marcos' prized shoes

MANILA, Philippines (AP) ? Termites, storms and neglect have damaged part of former Philippine first lady Imelda Marcos' legendary collection of shoes and other possessions left behind after she and her dictator husband were driven into U.S. exile by a 1986 popular revolt.

Hundreds of pieces of late strongman Ferdinand Marcos' clothing, including the formal native see-through barong shirts he wore during his two-decade rule, have also begun to gather mold and fray after being stored for years without protection at the presidential palace and later at Manila's National Museum, officials told The Associated Press on Sunday.

The Marcoses fled the Philippines at the climax of an army-backed "people power" revolt which became a harbinger of change in authoritarian regimes worldwide. Ferdinand Marcos died in exile in Hawaii in 1989 and his widow and children returned home years later.

They left staggering amounts of personal belongings, clothes and art objects at the palace, including at least 1,220 pairs of Imelda Marcos' shoes.

More than 150 cartons of clothes, dress accessories and shoes of the Marcoses were transferred to the National Museum for safekeeping two years ago after termites, humidity and mold threatened the apparel at the riverside palace. They deteriorated further at the museum after the fragile boxes were abandoned in a padlocked hall that had no facilities to protect such relics and was inundated by tropical rains last month due to a gushing leak in the ceiling, museum officials said.

Museum staffers, who were not aware the boxes contained precious mementoes from the Marcoses, opened the hall on the fourth floor of the building after noticing water pouring out below the door. They were shocked to see Marcos' shoes and gowns when they opened the wet boxes, officials said.

Workers hurriedly moved the boxes to a dry room and some were later brought to a museum laboratory, where a small team of curators scrambled to assess the extent of the damage, a process that may take months given the huge volume of the apparel. Some items have been damaged by termites and mold beyond repair, according to museum curator Orlando Abinion, who is heading the effort.

"We're doing a conservation rescue," Abinion told the AP. "There was termite infestation and mold in past years, and these were aggravated by last month's storm."

"It's unfortunate because Imelda may have worn some of these clothes in major official events and as such have an important place in our history," he said.

AP journalists saw a badly tattered box at the museum filled with damaged and soiled leather bags and designer shoes belonging to Imelda Marcos. Termites had damaged the heel and sole of a white Pierre Cardin shoe. Other shoes were warped out of shape or badly stained.

About 100 of Ferdinand Marcos' barong shirts were squeezed tightly into another box, some still attached to plastic hangers. A white barong shirt on top, with the presidential seal emblazoned on its pocket, had reddish stains and a sleeve was nearly torn off.

Imelda Marcos, now a member of the House of Representatives, was not available for comment Sunday.

Her massive shoe collection, including top U.S. and European brands, astounded the world and became a symbol of excess in the Southeast Asian nation, where many still walked barefoot out of abject poverty.

Ferdinand Marcos' successor, democracy icon Corazon Aquino, accused him of stealing billions of dollars during his 20-year rule and ordered many of his assets seized.

The clothes and shoes of the Marcoses were not among the assets allegedly stolen by them and sequestered by the government following the dictator's fall, according to Presidential Commission on Good Government official Maita Gonzaga. The government has so far recovered $2.24 billion worth of cash, bank accounts and prime real estate from the Marcoses and their cronies, she said.

After the 1986 revolt, Aquino had Imelda Marcos' shoes displayed at the presidential palace as a symbol of the former first lady's lavish lifestyle. The shoes were then removed from public view and stored in the palace basement when Aquino stepped down in 1992.

Mrs. Marcos once claimed most of her foreign-branded shoes were fake, though that has never been independently verified. But the world's fascination with her footwear, including a battery-operated pair that blinked when she danced, has ensured a hefty price tag. A 1990 U.S. charity auction of one pair donated by her fetched $10,000.

Imelda Marcos claimed many of the shoes were gifts from Filipino shoemakers in suburban Marikina city, the country's shoemaking capital. Marikina officials borrowed 800 pairs of her shoes in 2001 for a shoe museum, which has become a tourist spot.

Unapologetic about the past, Mrs. Marcos said her shoes became her best defense.

"They went into my closets looking for skeletons, but thank God, all they found were shoes, beautiful shoes," she told reporters when she inaugurated the shoe museum.

Massive flooding, however, damaged dozens of pairs of Marcos' shoes in Marikina in 2009.

About 765 pairs, including famous brands like Gucci, Charles Jourdan, Christian Dior, Ferragamo, Chanel and Prada, survived the Marikina floods. The shoes, size 8 1/2 to 9, still look remarkably new due to meticulous museum care, which includes displaying them in airtight and dust-free glass cabinets in an air-conditioned gallery, away from direct sunlight. The shoe collection draws a daily crowd of 50 to 100 Philippine and foreign tourists, who almost always leave in awe, museum manager Jane Ballesteros said.

"The first word they utter is 'Wow,' followed by the question, 'Was she able to wear all of these?'" Ballesteros said. "When I say, yes, look at the scratches on the soles, the next reaction is, 'Really?'"

"It's amusing," Ballesteros said. "Her shoes never fail to astound people years after."

How To Make A Good Impression While Online Dating | Care2 ...

You only get one chance to make a first impression; this is as true in Internet dating as it is in life. But now that there are millions of people dating online, the competition is fiercer than ever. If you want to get someone?s attention, you need your initial email to really standout.

I will get to some sample emails, but before I do, let?s look at a few simple guidelines to help you write that irresistible introductory email to the potential future love of your life:

1.?Be brief. Don?t write more than a short paragraph. All you?re trying to do in this first email is arouse someone?s curiosity and get him or her to respond.

2.?Be funny. Everyone loves humor. Don?t just say, ?I?m funny,? say something funny like, ?Boy, are you cute! Email me; I don?t bite!? This one gets ?em every time!

3.?Be sexy. Let?s be honest: the search for true love eventually leads to sex. So what?s the harm in a little harmless sexual innuendo? This doesn?t mean you sleep with someone on the first, second or even tenth date, but there?s no harm in creating a little sexual spark right from the start.

4.?Be provocative. Don?t be afraid to go over the edge a bit and say something forthright. A client once saw that someone had put her in his favorites. Here?s what she wrote: ?Hey! Hurry up and write me! How are we going to get this romance off the ground?? She got a response within minutes and a date for the following Friday.

5.?Be silly. Don?t belabor what you write. The best emails are off the cuff. ?Hey, I like collecting chopsticks, you like collecting chopsticks! Looks like we?re a match made in heaven. ;-) ? One last thing: use emoticons and acronyms, but use them sparingly. More than a couple in an email is overkill.

And now for some examples. Here are a two sample emails that would stand out in the crowd:

Example 1. His profile said that he had a mysterious smile, said he likes to camp and had a picture of himself in Joshua Tree Natl. Forest.

She wrote: Hello Handsome! You are cute as a button. Is that okay to say to a man? What?s going on behind that sexy smile of yours? You go to some cool spots. I see you like to camp but do you glamp? Ever been? Check it out, it?s quite the phenomena. http://goglamping.net. I haven?t been but it looks like fun. I?ve also never been to Joshua Tree but I love the album by U2. Does that count or am I stretching? Hey, I?m lookin? for commonalities here. You gotta give me points for that, right?

Email me if you think we?re a match.? There?s a lot more where that came from.

Lexie

Example 2. His profile said that he likes to take naps after running 15 miles, works as a financial manager and needs a while to open up.

She wrote: I like to take naps after running 15 minutes. Does that make us a match? I could also use some financial management, among other things. I have lots to offer in return. My stellar sense of humor, for one thing. And, I am nothing if not modest. I make great banana bread. I?m still working on the coffee. It?s not consistent. We might have to go out for that.

Lots more to talk about. Bet I can get you to open up!

Email me if you think we?re a match!

Best Speakers For Your PC System | Computers and Technology

Internet and Technology | Computers and Technology | * Written by Vinnit Alex | Friday, 21 September 2012 00:38 | Word Count: 451

Without good quality speakers you computer can never be considered as complete and you can never experience its proper functionality. Speakers are that part of your PC that not only inputs life to it but at the same time enhances the effect of the movies, music or the games played on your PC. A wide variety of speakers in every price range are available in the market and you can always choose the one that will give you the best that you can ever have from your PC.

Though a wide variety of brands manufacturing speakers are available in the market HP Speakers have always enjoyed a special preference among customers for the maximum clarity of sound that they are capable of providing. HP offers a wide range of 2.1, 5.1 and 7.1 speakers of different types and depending upon the size of the room you can always purchase the one that best suits your requirements. In technical terms a 2.1 speaker means a woofer with two for the left and the right channel while the 5.1 and 7.1 series of HP Speakers come with a woofer along with five and seven sound boxes respectively to be placed in different parts of the room maintaining a minimum distance so that sounds created by then do not overlap and you can really feel the effect of complete surround sound.

With a set of good Logitech Speakers you are always assured of your ultimate music experience as the clarity as well as the quality of the sound produced by these speakers can easily be counted among the best in the world and you can really experience digital sound at its captivating best. a wide range of Logitech speakers are also available in every price category and there is every assurance that they will always provide you the best musical experience that that can be produced by your laptop or PC. Just like HP and Logitech Moser Baer Speakers are also quite popular and known for their ability to create exceptional quality sound that can be at par with the best in the industry. The prices of computer speakers depend upon a number of factors but it doesn?t require any special knowledge to understand that 7.1 Moser Baer Speakers or speakers from the other brands are obviously going to cost more than the 5.1 and 2.1 speakers but the difference in the quality of the produced sound well worth their high price tag and there is very little chance that you will regret your decision to spend a few thousand bucks more for a sound system for your computer to experience the true clarity and unmatchable quality of modern digital audio at its very best.

Dot Earth Blog: Single-Study Syndrome and the G.M.O. Food Fight

[This is a modified, expanded version of my Tumblr post from yesterday. I was on the run between Arctic ice symposium and teaching duties; more on ice anon.]

11:31 a.m. | Updated below as marked |
I?ve written here before about what I call ?single-study syndrome,? the habit of the more aggressive camps of advocates surrounding hot issues (e.g., climate, chemical exposure, fracking) to latch onto and push studies supporting an agenda, no matter how tenuous ? or dubious ? the research might be.

Here?s a fresh example from the food wars, which are particularly heated right now because of California?s looming vote over Proposition 37, which would require labeling of genetically modified foods:

Groups opposed to genetically modified crops or ?Big Ag??are heavily promoting a?new study?claiming to find big impacts on longevity and cancer rates in rats fed Roundup-ready corn (and separately exposed to the herbicide for which the corn variety is named). Andrew Pollack?s?news article on the study?describes the methods and findings.

The study has been?quickly and widely criticized, even as it has been written on far and wide.?One issue is that, while the experiments ran for two years, far longer than most rat studies of food safety, the chosen rat breed commonly develops tumors after two years. Combined with small sample size (the different test groups had 20 animals each), this has led even some advocates for G.M.O. labeling to question the results.

The food researcher and writer?Marion Nestle, a supporter of labeling, called the study ?weirdly complicated? in?an excellent look at the work?posted yesterday by Tim Carman of the Washington Post.

In Rosie Mestel?s?Los Angeles Times article, another scientist said the combination of a tumor-prone rat breed and small sample size created big problems:

Another red flag was that tumor rates didn?t increase in line with the dose of GMOs fed to animals, as scientists would expect to see if the genetically engineered corn were to blame, said Kevin Folta, a plant molecular biologist at the?University of Florida?in?Gainesville. Instead, ?you are likely seeing variation of normal tumor incidence in a small population of rats,? he said.

Please read the pieces by Carman and Mestel end to end if you have time.

For more background on the California ballot tussle, read Stephanie Strom?s recent feature and video report.?Here?s my view. As I wrote in considering ?pink slime:?

I?m all for?open disclosure of food contents, but not when the labeling effort is aimed at fomenting fear over facts. (This issue goes far beyond beef byproducts; I encourage you to read this Colorado State University analysis ofthe issues surrounding labeling of genetically engineered foods.)

While I?m for transparency, I don?t like the California initiative because it?s rife with exemptions and special cases, all of which speak of a double standard and point to the intent being less to protect public health than make life complicated or costlier for some agriculture sectors.

If a fair labeling process were somehow created, I actually think it?d build public support for genetically modified foods in the long haul, primarily by illustrating how many safe, nutritious foods now unremarkably contain some constituent from this form of agricultural technology.

I?ll set up a separate post to vet the prime arguments on all sides. My colleague Mark Bittman has a different view, laid out in ?G.M.O.?s: Let?s Label ?Em.?

For more on the debate over risks from Roundup-ready corn and the herbicide Roundup, read biologist* Michael Eisen?s June blog post: ?#GMOFAQ How Bt corn and Roundup Ready soy work, and why they should not scare you.?

[11:31 a.m. | Updated | Professor Eisen, who?s at the University of California, Berkeley, sent this reaction to my post:

It?s a really messed up field. The vast majority of research on GMO safety ? on both sides ? is done by people out to prove something rather than investigate something. This affects every aspect of the work, from study design, to execution, interpretation and publicity.

This particular study was so poorly designed ? the highly sensitized line, the inexcusably small number of animals ? that you didn?t even have to look at the ridiculous statements from the lead author (like ?GMOs are a pesticide sponge?) to see that it was biased.

The result of all of this severely tainted work (and there?s plenty from the pro-GMO side too) is that the really good science in the field gets drowned out, and isn?t taken seriously because people just assume that it, too, must be biased. Total mess.

For a broader view of the literature on health studies focused on genetically modified foods, read this review paper from 2011:??Assessment of the health impact of GM plant diets in long-term?and multigenerational animal feeding trials: A literature review.?

Abstract:

The aim of this systematic review was to collect data concerning the effects of diets containing GM maize, potato, soybean, rice, or triticale on animal health. We examined 12 long-term studies (of more than 90?days, up to 2?years in duration) and 12 multigenerational studies (from 2 to 5 generations). We referenced the 90-day studies on GM feed for which long-term or multigenerational study data were available. Many parameters have been examined using biochemical analyses, histological examination of specific organs, hematology and the detection of transgenic DNA. The statistical findings and methods have been considered from each study. Results from all the 24 studies do not suggest any health hazards and, in general, there were no statistically significant differences within parameters observed. However, some small differences were observed, though these fell within the normal variation range of the considered parameter and thus had no biological or toxicological significance. If required, a 90-day feeding study performed in rodents, according to the OECD Test Guideline, is generally considered sufficient in order to evaluate the health effects of GM feed. The studies reviewed present evidence to show that GM plants are nutritionally equivalent to their non-GM counterparts and can be safely used in food and feed.

Addendum: When research cuts against an agenda, other issues arise. A ridiculous petition has been initiated aimed at forcing the retraction of a paper by Stanford University scientists on the relative nutritional merits of organic and conventional foods. Rosie Mestel, a vital guide on such issues, did a valuable piece that essentiallydismantles the assertions of the activists pushing the petition. I agree with Paul Raeburn, writing on Knight Science Journalism tracker, who?hailed the story?for charting ?a clear path for us through a nasty thicket.?

11:34 a.m. | Clarification | * Michael Eisen, while writing much on genetics, is better described as an evolutionary biologist. I originally described him as a geneticist.

Blood pressure diet works, but adherence drops among African ...

Better adherence to the DASH (Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension) diet is associated with significant reductions in blood pressure. However, African-Americans may be less likely than whites to adopt the diet, according to researchers at Duke University Medical Center.

The findings, which appear online September 19 in the Journal of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, suggest that altering traditional recipes to meet nutritional guidelines rather than eliminating certain foods altogether may result in better adherence among African-Americans.

The DASH diet is recognized as the diet of choice for preventing and managing high blood pressure. The diet is rich in fruits, vegetables, and low fat dairy products, and is low in fats and cholesterol.

?Previous research, including results from our ENCORE study, established the DASH diet as an important approach for lowering blood pressure, and for some individuals, it may be an effective alternative to taking medication for hypertension,? said James A. Blumenthal, PhD, professor of behavioral medicine in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Science at Duke University Medical Center. ?In this study we were interested in whether dietary adherence was related to blood pressure changes and what factors predicted who would adhere to the diet.?

The study was a new analysis of data from the ENCORE trial, led by Duke researchers to evaluate the effectiveness of the DASH diet on cardiovascular health. Participants were 144 sedentary, overweight or obese adults, who had high blood pressure and were not taking medication.

Researchers measured a series of clinical and behavioral factors at the start of the study including blood pressure, weight, and physical fitness, as well as dietary habits. Depression, anxiety and social support were also evaluated as potential predictors of adherence to the regimen.

Participants were randomly assigned to one of three treatment groups: the DASH diet alone; the DASH diet in combination with weight-loss counseling and aerobic exercise; or no change in diet and exercise habits.

After four months, participants in the group that got the DASH diet plus weight-loss counseling and exercise lost an average of 19 pounds, while weight remained stable in the other two groups.

Participants in both the DASH diet alone and DASH diet plus counseling groups had significant reductions in blood pressure, with greater adherence to the DASH diet resulting in the largest drops in blood pressure. The finding suggests that that following the DASH diet lowers blood pressure, independent of exercise and weight loss.

However, the addition of weight loss and exercise to the DASH diet promoted even greater reductions in blood pressure and improved other measures of cardiovascular health. ?For overweight or obese patients with high blood pressure, clinicians should recommend the DASH diet in conjunction with exercise and weight loss for the best results,? said Alan Hinderliter, MD, a cardiologist at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and an investigator in this study.

The researchers noted that African-American participants were less likely than white participants to eat foods recommended in the DASH diet prior to beginning the study. While both African-American and white participants in the DASH treatment groups increased the amount of DASH foods they ate, African-Americans were less likely to adopt the DASH diet compared to their white counterparts. No other demographic, behavioral, or social variable predicted whether participants would adhere to the DASH diet.

?We need to be aware of cultural differences in dietary preferences in order to help people better adopt a DASH-friendly diet,? Blumenthal said. ?It is important to take into account traditional food choices and cooking practices when attempting to incorporate more DASH foods into daily meal plans.?

Culturally sensitive changes to implementing the DASH diet, such as modifying traditional ?soul food? recipes to meet nutritional recommendations rather than eliminating foods altogether, may result in better adherence among African-Americans.

?Given the success of the DASH diet, we know that changing lifestyles can make a significant difference in people?s health,? Blumenthal said. ?And in the long run, if people are able to maintain changes to their diet and exercise habits, it can lead to a lower risk for heart attack and stroke.?

How iPhone 5 Will Change Mobile Ads - Business Insider

Apple's iPhone 5 could dominate mobile ad impressions on iPhones within just one year, according to a study of iPhone mobile ad data by Velti.

(Velti is one of the major buyers and servers of mobile advertising. Its networks are set to generate $290 million in revenue this year.)

The company wanted to figure out how quickly people would adopt the iPhone 5, and how quickly clients' ads would start appearing on apps and browsers in the new phone.

So it looked back through its historic data, from the launch of the iPhone 4S. Here are a couple of charts illustrating what it found.

The iPhone 4S claimed over 10 percent of exchange-wide impressions just four months after release:

Velti claims that, "Based on past iPhone releases, we predict that within 6 months, iPhone 5 will drive over 25 percent of all iPhone impressions, and its release will result in a major upgrade cycle."

The company believes iPhone 5 will be adopted more quickly than the iPhone 4S, and will become one of the top 5 devices on the exchange in the next 6 months. Here's what that might look like, with iPhone 5 serving about 40 percent of ad impressions by September 2013:
